Salmon with Creamy Dill Sauce

There's nothing like fresh salmon, and my mom bakes it just right so it nearly melts in your mouth. The sour cream dill sauce is subtly seasoned with horseradish so that it doesn't overpower the delicate salmon flavor. —Susan Emery, Everett, Washington

  • 1 salmon fillet (about 2 pounds)
  • 1 to 1-1/2 teaspoons lemon-pepper seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon onion salt
  • 1 small onion, sliced and separated into rings
  • 6 lemon slices
  • 1/4 cup butter, cubed
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 1/3 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon prepared horseradish
  • 3/4 teaspoon dill weed
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt
  • Pepper to taste


  • Line a 15x10x1-in. baking pan with heavy-duty foil; grease lightly. Place salmon skin side down on foil. Sprinkle with lemon pepper and onion salt. Top with onion and lemon. Dot with butter. Fold foil around salmon; seal tightly,
  • Bake at 350° for 20 minutes. Open foil carefully, allowing steam to escape. Broil 4-6 in. from the heat for 3-5 minutes or until the fish flakes easily with a fork.
  • Meanwhile, combine the sauce ingredients until smooth. Serve with salmon.

    This was amazing-best I’ve ever tasted. I used a little more horseradish- I think the horseradish snd Lemon really makes it stand out! And simple to make!

    I made this recipe for the first time for my husband and I, it was absolutely amazing, the Dill Sauce was so good! The whole meal was fabulous! I will Definately make this again! Keeper for sure!

    Made this last night, it was a winner. I was leary of the mayo / sour cream mixture, but it worked. I added a bit more dill than called for and a bit more horseradish. The whole meal was delishious. My family loved it. We served with a side salad and small creamer potatoes. I definitely will make again.

    Great recipe. Flavourful and simple to pull together. Couple of minor changes due to not have all ingredients on hand. Substituted yogurt for sour cream in the sauce and used red onions instead of cooking onions. Also baked the fish for about 16 minutes instead of 20. Served with mini potatoes cooked in the same pan (microwaved for a few minutes to soften) and sauted spinach. Soooooo tasty, definitely guest worthy!

    I got this recipe from A Taste of Home magazine over 20 years ago. I had five children back then and this was and still is their favorite salmon recipe ever. All of my kid's friends would ask to come over if they found out I was making salmon. This is still my most requested recipe and whenever we have a dinner party my friends say " Will you please make your salmon?" . It has the consistency of a delicately poached fish and it will never dry out . The seasonings are just enough to let the fish shine and you can tweak the ingredients in the sauce to your liking, One of my coworkers didn't want to eat this, devoured the dish and then asked if she could take the leftover sauce home. It is a homerun and so easy!

    This is a delicious recipe. My husband isn't a fan of any fish, but I try to serve some type of fish at least once a week. Even he liked it. The dill sauce was so good, I used some of that as a dressing on my tossed salad. Served it with rosemary roasted potato wedges that I cooked on the same baking sheet. I wonderful meal with very little cleanup. Thank you!

    I rate 5 stars in case it doesn't show. After reading both positive and negative reviews here is mine. IF your Salmon is thick (2") or more it will take the 20 minutes or more to cook then broil. The seasoning was great not over powering just right I even added some garlic powder. Made Dill Sauce exactly as written and it was delicious. I will definitely make again.

    I don’t personally like salmon but my children do and they really liked this recipe. The dill sauce was their favorite. I have since then made this several times with other fish and the sauce is a family favorite now. Thanks for a wonderful recipe.

    Gotta say...We eat a lot of Salmon both at home and in restaurants. So, we critique in the extreme. In addition, I am always in search of a stellar dill sauce. So here it is; the salmon is exceptional and the dill sauce is just exactly the way i like it.
