Decorating Pies with Pastry Cutouts

Pastry cutouts are a fast, festive way to dress up plain single-crust pies. To make cutouts, roll out dough to 1/8-inch thickness. Cut out with 1/2- or 1-inch cookie cutters of desired shape. If desired, score designs on cutouts with sharp knife. Bake cutouts on an ungreased baking sheet at 400° for 6-8 minutes or until golden brown. Remove to a wire rack to cool. Arrange cutouts over the cooled filling on the baked pie. Cutouts can also be used on double-crust pies. Brush the bottom of each unbaked cutout with water and place on top of an unbaked pie. Press lightly to secure. Bake pie according to the recipe.
