How-to Make Festive Glass Vase Filters

Decorating for the holidays doesn’t have to be an expensive endeavor. Although there’s no denying the outstanding beauty of poinsettias, amaryllis and other Christmas flowers, the pretty plants only last so long…especially if you don’t have a green thumb! But it is worth investing in several clear glass containers in various shapes and sizes. Hunt for them throughout the year on sale or on clearance at department stores. You can also pick them up at bargain prices at discount stores, flea markets and rummage sales. Put the versatile vessels to work all year long in countless decorating displays. Below we offer three ideas for the Christmas season. Use these photos as inspiration to create your own seasonal decorations.

Edible Centerpiece. For a display that has both form and function, fill clear vases with Christmas candy…then encourage hungry guests to dig in! For a spectacular striped look, we used a variety of peppermints including sticks, circles and rectangles.

Beautiful Baubles. Bright, shiny ornaments are always eye-catching on a table. We separated round glass ornaments by color, and then put each color in a different vase. You could also fill the containers with the same color of ornaments or use ornaments with different shapes (such as stars).

Natural Wonders. An impressive centerpiece is as easy as the nearest pine tree! Collect small, medium and large pine cones. You could even purchase white-tipped pine cones from a craft store.
