Piggly Wiggly was founded in 1916 by Clarence Saunders in Memphis, Tennessee. Today, there are more than 500 independently owned and operated stores in 17 states.

It was the first self-service store
We have the Pig’s founder, Clarence Saunders, to thank for being able to choose our own groceries when we shop. Before opening Piggly Wiggly, shoppers had to give their orders to clerks who gathered the goods for them from behind a counter, giving them no choice in the matter.
The origin of the name is a mystery
Piggly Wiggly is a fun name to say, but how the name was picked remains a mystery. Once, when Saunders was asked why he picked the name, he said: “So people will ask that very question.” It’s definitely an easy one to remember!
