They look just like a good homemade refrigerator pickle and have a satisfying bite: crunchy with a snap.
Because these pickles are fresh, they don’t have as long a shelf life as traditionally canned pickles, but believe us when we say not a single spear will go to waste. We rank them among the best pickles anywhere, along with these other pickle brands.
Best Instant Rice: Good & Gather
We know it’s just rice. You aren’t looking for anything flashy—just a good base for your next healthy side dish or easy dinner. For a great basic, go for Target’s Good & Gather Instant White Rice. This instant rice has a tender texture and a beautiful snow-white appearance making it a great start to any dinner recipe and especially good for soaking up delicious stir-fry sauces. Best Ketchup: Heinz
In our blind tests, Heinz Tomato Ketchup always comes out on top. What can we say: this ketchup has the best balance of tomato flavor, tanginess and sweetness. This is exactly the type of ketchup we all want to have on the table at our cookouts and in the fridge when we whip up some frozen fries in the air fryer. Best Macaroni: De Cecco Elbows No. 81
Sometimes, no matter what you do, pasta turns out a little too soft. But with De Cecco, you never have to worry about too-soft noodles! Our testers say this pasta has a phenomenal al dente texture and doesn’t turn to mush when boiled for a minute too long. It holds its shape well and has the slightly chewy texture we crave from macaroni. This is a great option when your recipe calls for a noodle that holds up, like in a pasta fagioli soup. Best Mayo: Hellmann’s
If you use mayo for more than just sandwiches, dips and salads, you need a good all-purpose ingredient like Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise. Hellman’s combines all of what we want from mayonnaise in a single jar: it’s thick but spreadable; tangy but not too overpowering.
Overall, our Test Kitchen team finds Hellmann’s to be a great go-to for many applications. So crack open a jar to make coleslaw for a cookout and keep it open while you make yourself a snack before the party starts. Best Oat Milk: Oatly
Approximating the texture and consistency of dairy milk is a challenge—many dairy-free options fail. But here Oatly succeeds. The original oat milk company offers a beverage that has the same consistency as a glass of milk which makes it easy to drink, easy to stir into coffee and easy to add to recipes that would normally call for milk, like a smoothie bowl. Having this just-right consistency is key; you don’t want to alter your routines and recipes significantly just to accommodate a new ingredient.

Best Pizza Sauce: Rao’s
Want a sauce that reminds you of your favorite fancy pizzeria? That store-bought sauce is Rao’s. According to our test team, Rao’s tastes fresh and homemade. Is there any higher praise than that? When it comes to any store-bought item, we’re all craving scratch-made taste.
What makes Rao’s really stand out was the fresh tomato flavor as well as oregano and garlic. All these ingredients are visible in the sauce—even a few tomato seeds which makes this brand feel like the real deal. This sauce stands out and won’t get lost—even with a great homemade crust and fresh mozzarella. Our Test Kitchen pros say these other pizza sauce brands are good bets, too.
Best Plant-Based Burger: ImpossibleÂ
If you’re a beef-burger fan looking to try meatless ones (at least some of the time), you’ll want to pick up Impossible Burger. These much-hyped burgers are one of our Test Kitchen’s favorites because Impossible really replicates the experience of a beef burger using soy and other veggie ingredients. This burger looks like a real burger, sears up like a real burger, has the texture of a real burger and tastes a lot like…yep, a real burger. This patty has even our most serious burger fans willing to reach in for seconds. We named these other plant-based burger brands among the best, too.
Best San Marzano Tomatoes: Hunt’s
The biggest compliment our Test Kitchen can give to a packaged product is to call it almost homemade (our pros’ palates know the difference between purchased and from scratch). When it comes to Hunt’s San Marzano Style Tomatoes, you might just think these are garden tomatoes that have been canned at home. It doesn’t get better than that—other than making your own canned tomatoes.
These tomatoes from Hunt’s (also one of our favorite ketchup brands), have a mild, sweet flavor much like plum tomatoes picked from the garden. There are no bitter or tinny flavors like you might get from lesser quality tomatoes. The texture here is firm, meaning they would hold up well to dicing for recipes like bruschetta or certain soups. In any recipe where tomatoes are the star, Hunt’s tomatoes will shine. Our Test Kitchen recommends these other San Marzano tomato brands, too.
Best Soy Sauce: Kikkoman
If you keep just one brand of soy sauce in your fridge door, let it be Kikkoman. Our Test Kitchen pros agree this sauce has a solid balance of sweetness and saltiness with just a kick of acid. This nicely balanced sauce is perfect for making Easy Pad Thai or Grilled Huli Huli Chicken. As a soy sauce, though, the primary flavor is salt, and that’s just fine. This is precisely the ingredient you need to emphasize all the other ingredients in your recipe. Just remember: when using generous amounts of soy sauce, you can omit the salt.
Testers also appreciate that it’s readily available. Kikkoman is sold at nearly every supermarket and big box store, so you’re never far from one of the best soy sauce options.
Best Taco Seasoning: Old El Paso
Need a taco seasoning with some personality? You want Old El Paso Original Taco Seasoning Mix. This standout spice mix boasts the smoky cumin flavor we look for in tacos, but balances that spice with hits of chipotle, chili powder and black pepper. This mix has a little kick—but not so much that it would offend sensitive eaters.

The Test Kitchen team appreciates that this garlic-forward Texas toast delivers on real garlic flavor as advertised, as well as some other Italian herbs like parsley and oregano. No preservatives or artificial flavors in this brand—it’s the real deal. If you can’t find New York Bakery, our pros recommend these other Texas toast brands.
Best Tuna: StarKist Albacore White Tuna in Water
With its large chunks of flaky albacore tuna, StarKist is our team’s favorite. It’s juicy and bright with just the right level of salt. Packed in water, this brand is super healthy—it has 17 grams of protein, 60% of your vitamin B12 for the day and is just 80 calories per pouch. That’s pretty darn good if you’re trying to eat well and want to incorporate more seafood into your diet. These other tuna brands are good bets, too.
Best Vanilla Extract: Nielsen-Massey
While vanilla really shines in vanilla-forward recipes like ice cream or creme brulee, you can’t forget that its main job in most recipes is to enhance the flavors of other ingredients. Good vanilla makes chocolate, fruit, nuts, sugar and butter all taste better. And that is the real strength of Nielsen-Massey Pure Vanilla Extract. It elevates all these ingredients and makes them shine.
Our testing team finds that frostings made with this vanilla extract taste richer and more buttery than other options—not just vanilla-forward.
