We Tried the Dunkin’ Donuts Mocha Oreo. Here’s What You Should Know.

Two of our favorite guilty-pleasure food companies-Dunkin' Donuts and Oreo-have partnered to release a limited-edition cookie. How'd it taste? Read the review to find out.

Bringing together two unexpected foods can lead to brilliant results. Bacon Cheeseburger Tater Tot Bake, anyone? The most recent flavor mashup to hit the market: Dunkin’ Donuts Mocha Oreo Cookies. Yes, you read that right. Oreo banded with coffee chain Dunkin’ Donuts to release a limited-edition cookie that claims to taste like an iced mocha coffee.

Like most people with an insatiable sweet tooth, I have my finger to the pulse of Oreo’s latest flavors. So when I heard the news about this caffeinated cookie, I made a mad dash to the store to buy a pack (and some milk for dunking, too). I asked myself, “Could these Oreos simultaneously curb my coffee and dessert cravings?” Curious about the results? Read on to find out.

At a Glance

If the Dunkin’ Donuts logo on the wrapping wasn’t a dead giveaway, the oversize image of an iced mocha made it clear: There’s bound to be some coffee flavor here. Out of the package, the cookie looked much like an average Oreo-but instead of the creme filling being white, it had a caramel brown tone.

Takeaway: The filling looks slightly more artificial than I’d like-but hey, that’s not going to stop me.

The Bite

Eager to taste, I took a single bite. My first thought: Praise sweet Oreo heaven! Sandwiched between those two brittle wafers was a thick layer of creamy, chocolaty goodness. Although no strong coffee flavor was apparent, the rich filling made my taste buds dance for joy.

Takeaway: Did I buy double-stuffed? It seems there’s a ton of creme in these puppies. And I am A-OK with that.

The Break

After polishing off my first cookie, I decided to test the Oreo’s composition. Using a purely scientific method I mastered in grade school, I pried a cookie apart. To my surprise, the Oreo did not have a clean break. Instead, portions of creme clung to each wafer. Slightly defeated, I tried again with a second cookie. Same result.

Taking a closer look, I deduced that this filling was softer than your average Oreo’s-almost like the thick buttercream you’d find on top of a cupcake. I decided to taste it on its own. Without the competing chocolate wafers, the creme had a hint of coffee flavor. To be clear: This isn’t the Italian espresso coffee flavor, but more like a sweet mocha you’d find at, well, Dunkin’ Donuts. I’m a fan.

Takeaway: To taste that sweet coffee flavor, you’ve gotta eat the filling plain. To be honest, I wish I could buy it by the tubful.

The Dunk

It’s common knowledge that the most practical way to eat an Oreo is to dunk it into a cold glass of milk. (Just like our favorite homemade cookies!) In all honesty, when I submerged the cookie I was hoping it would magically transform my milk into a Dunkin’ Donuts iced coffee-but alas, it did not.

What I was left with was a saturated cookie that melted in my mouth. All the creamy and chocolaty flavors melted into one for total sweet-tooth satisfaction.

Takeaway: Bravo, Dunkin’ Donuts Mocha Oreo. Now, somebody please keep me from eating the entire sleeve!

One More Thing…

The following morning I had a brilliant idea. I couldn’t believe it didn’t hit me sooner. Dunk the mocha Oreos in coffee. I filled up my cup o’ joe and carefully dipped the cookie. “Yes!” my taste buds cried out. We just may have found coffee’s favorite cookie.

What We Should Take Away

Will this new flavor be a substitute for your coffee addiction? Sadly, no. But for a cookie, I give the Dunkin’ Donut Mocha Oreos a 10/10. If you like mocha along with the chocolate crunch and thick creamy filling of Oreos, I suggest giving it a try. And when you do, I highly recommend pairing it with coffee-or better yet, this Mocha Morning Drink. Dunk on!
