New Recall Affects More Than 99,000 Pounds of Chicken Products

Another recall has been issued—this time over frozen chicken dinners.

There have been more than a handful of recalls since the start of 2019. It’s only February and we’ve already seen a recall for Gold Medal flour, Perdue Farms chicken nuggets, Johnsonville pork patties and more. This time, 99,975 pounds of chicken products from Happi Foodi and Southwest Grocers are at risk.

What products are recalled?

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the recall comes from VICS Acquisition LLC. You might know them for their brands Happi Foodi and Southeast Grocers. The specific Happi Foodi product affected by the recall is the Bloody Mary Inspired Chicken. Southeast Grocers Brand Marsala Chicken and Southeast Grocers Brand Mediterranean Herb Chicken are also at risk.

Why are they being recalled? The packaged dinners contain eggs, which isn’t listed anywhere on the packaging. For those allergic to eggs, not listing this ingredient can be pretty dangerous.

Here’s how to enjoy eating out when you have a food allergy.

How do I know if I have one of these products?

The recall is affecting the above-mentioned chicken products produced between August 7 and October 15, 2018. You can see the product label here. If you have a recalled product, you should be able to find the number P-34622 somewhere on the package.

It’s important to note that the Happi Foodi products were distributed nationwide. The Southeast Grocers products are exclusive to Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina. Here’s what you should look out for when checking through your freezer:

  • 1.5-lb. packages containing one frozen steam bag meal of “Happi Foodi BLOODY MARY INSPIRED CHICKEN” with lot codes 14528 and 15092 and use by dates of March 2, 2020 and April 15, 2020.
  • 1.5-lb. packages containing one frozen steam bag meal of “SE Grocers MARSALA CHICKEN” with lot codes 14177 and 14532 and use by dates of Feb. 8, 2020 and March 3, 2020.
  • 1.5-lb. packages containing one frozen steam bag meal of “SE Grocers MEDITERRANEAN STYLE HERB CHICKEN” with lot codes 14145 and 14531 and use by dates of Feb. 7, 2020 and March 4, 2020.

I have one of these products! What should I do with it?

Have a product under recall? The USDA just urges that you get rid of the item as soon as possible. Like most recalls, you have a couple of options. You can toss the food or return it to the store of purchase. So far, there aren’t any medical reports linking to the recall; it was issued out of an abundance of caution. As we learned in kindergarten, it’s much better to be safe than sorry.

Why have there been so many recalls? This is what the FDA had to say.

How can I avoid allergens?

If you’ve got a food allergy, no matter how uncommon, make sure to check the ingredients on all the products you buy before tossing them in the fridge. Thoroughly wash utensils that come into contact with allergens, too.
