The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on November 29 that 4Earth Farms of Commerce, California, is recalling its vegetable medleys. The recall was initiated after 4Earth Farms learned that carrots used in its vegetable medleys may have been contaminated with E. coli.

What caused the E. coli outbreak?

The outbreak is linked to organic carrots from Grimmway Farms of Bakersfield, California. No illnesses have been reported to 4Earth Farms to date; however, the CDC reports 39 illnesses and one death associated with the broader E. coli outbreak.

What should I do next?

If you have any of the recalled products at home, do not eat them! To keep your family safe from E. coli, throw the vegetables away, and then clean and sanitize any surfaces they touched. Before you clean your refrigerator, pick up an antibacterial cleaner suitable for food contact surfaces.

If you have symptoms of an E. coli infection, such as severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever or nausea, reach out to your doctor right away. Note that symptoms don’t occur immediately after eating contaminated food. The incubation period for this type of E. coli ranges from 24 hours to 10 days.
