Back in the golden age of air travel, glamour was par for the course when you flew. The legroom was plentiful, and so were the tasty food and drinks. Over the years, flying became safer and more affordable, but also decidedly less glamorous. (Especially when traveling with the kids.) United Airlines has decided to bring back a taste of the golden age!
What to Expect at 35,000 Feet
United offers its travelers way more than the usual packet of peanuts. Starting May 1, they expanded the Choice Menu, adding egg and chicken chorizo tacos for breakfast and a barbecue chicken sandwich for lunch and dinner. On coast-to-coast flights, customers will also enjoy high-end dessert and beverage options. And if you’re a fan of Belgian beer, you’re in luck: United will be the first airline to offer Stella Artois aboard domestic and international flights!
“We are continually developing menu selections that follow current food trends and emerge from the many destinations we serve,” says Charlean Gmunder, the VP of Catering Operations for United. “We hope that our customers enjoy these new selections just as much as we enjoyed creating them.”
The egg and chicken chorizo tacos were inspired by street food and food truck trends across the country. Their “spicy, yet subtle” chorizo flavor was in development for more than a year and took into account feedback from more than 800 customers and flight attendants. (Turns out United has a Test Kitchen, too!) The end result involves scrambled eggs, chicken chorizo sausage, a blend of Swiss and American cheese, charred chipotle salsa and chives, all served on corn and flour tortillas.
(For a homemade version, this egg and chorizo wrap comes highly recommended.)
Down-home barbecue flavor
Just because you’re 35,000 feet in the air doesn’t mean you can’t get some down-home flavor! Just order the new barbecue chicken sandwich, which features pulled smoked chicken, barbecue sauce, cheddar jack cheese and a dill pickle plank, served on a focaccia roll. (Not traveling right now? Here’s a recipe for make-at-home barbecue chicken sliders.)
Along with Stella Artois, United is now pouring more craft beers, including Lagunitas Sumpin’ Easy Ale and a new craft IPA from New Belgium, the Citradelic Tangerine IPA. This is in response to United’s observation that its travelers are interested in local craft beers. We noticed the trend, too–check out the best craft beer from every state. In addition, United also has a signature cocktail–the Old Fashioned–made with whiskey and bitters and served with a classic orange rind garnish.
Love a good sundae? (So do we.) United is now offering sundaes with Ghirardelli toppings on its premium transcontinental flights. The toppings include Barista Dark Chocolate Mini Chips, Ghirardelli Hot Fudge, Ghirardelli Caramel Sauce and Barista Caramel Flavored Mini Chips. Just need a reason to travel from New York to LA! See how Ghirardelli stacks up against other chocolates in our taste test.
All these new items are now available for purchase on most domestic flights that are longer than three hours, and beer is even complimentary in United Economy on a number of international flights. We hope you’re taking off for somewhere soon!
