Starbucks Is Using Compostable Cold Cups—But Not Everyone Is Happy

The most enjoyable part of being a barista was creating foam designs on cappuccinos. But most of the time, people didn’t pause to enjoy their coffee in mugs in the café. They often grabbed a to-go cup that most certainly covered my design. So sad. But that’s the nature of the beast—coffee shops like Starbucks are often meant for those on the go. Cold drinks like Starbucks Refreshers or the latest Starbs Valentine’s Day menu are the ones that stand out since they’re served in cold cups.

While we’re still reeling over the return of Starbucks’ free refills, there’s been some different news hitting the coffee algorithm this week. It seems the chain has been trading its popular clear cold cups for opaque white compostable alternatives. The new cups are getting mixed reviews.

Why is this happening?

The switch is happening in a handful of stores in an effort to comply with local law mandates regarding commercial waste and pollution, according to USA Today. Starbucks even mentions the change on its website, stating, “In select markets, Starbucks provides more environmentally friendly compostable cups and lids.”

Deemed “commercially compostable cold cups,” these new white cups are fully opaque, much like the hot to-go cups. The difference is that these are made especially for cold drinks. Both the cup and the lid are completely white and made from a double-walled, fiber-based paper board with a bioplastic liner. Originally in 24 stores throughout California and Minnesota, they seem to be slowly spreading to more stores as time goes on.

Do people like the compostable cups?

There have been mixed opinions, to say the least. Some have taken to TikTok to voice their new frustrations with many other users agreeing in the comments that the design is poor and unappealing.

“No more taking aesthetic photos,” said one commenter. Another commenter who received this cup was confused when they picked up their cup, thinking Starbucks made someone else’s drink.

Reddit users seem to be split. While some explain that the cups are to comply with mandates and not all over, others believe they should be used all over as they already are in parts of Europe.

“If it means dramatically reducing the amount of plastic cups, we should all be rejoicing,” said one Reddit user.

“When I go to Starbucks I am paying for an experience. That experience includes a cup I can reuse and doesn’t compost when I’m using it. I am not rejoicing,” said another.

While we love to take aesthetic photos, it’s important to think about the planet and the impact single-use plastics can pose. If you are not a fan of the compostable cups, consider bringing your own reusable cup as an alternative.
