Martha Stewart has built her empire on elegance and good taste. Even when she’s making comfort food, like this mac and cheese or her pierogi recipe, the finished dish is somehow still sophisticated.

Recently, she took a trip down memory lane and shared a beloved late-night snack from her past. In an Instagram post, the lifestyle mogul revealed this sandwich, and it’s more unpretentious than fans expected!

What is Martha Stewart’s favorite sandwich?

In her post, Martha reflects on the time she spent bonding with her dad. “Late-night Scrabble tournaments were a big deal in our house,” she explains, “and we’d snack on these butter sandwiches with onions to fuel us through the long hours.”

You’re not misreading the quote. Martha and her father ate onion and butter sandwiches!

She says the combination of butter, soft white bread and sharp onions offered a satisfying balance of flavors. “It’s so simple,” she says, “but it’s a comfort food that carries so many great memories for me.”

Listen, I absolutely love onion recipes, but the idea of eating them raw on bread feels extreme. I guess if you start to doze off in the middle of a long board game, the sharpness of raw onion will jolt you awake!

What does Martha Stewart’s favorite sandwich taste like?

Martha made sure to include tips in case anyone wanted to recreate the sandwich, so I gave it a shot. She recommends choosing fresh bread, pungent onions and sweet butter to elevate the experience.

I assembled my ingredients and took a bite. At first, I didn’t get any of the onion flavor, just the crunch. The bread and butter were soft and creamy, so the crunch of the onion offered a nice bit of texture. After I was nearly done chewing, I got hit with a sharp blast of raw onion flavor. I took another bite, and it was the same experience: soft yet crunchy, then pungent.

The overall experience was…fine? I wasn’t repulsed by it, but I didn’t necessarily want to keep eating it. I offered a bite of the sandwich to my mom, who said it tasted kind of like egg salad. For what it’s worth, my mom said it would make a good tea sandwich, cut into triangles like a cucumber sandwich.  I guess this is a great way to get that egg salad flavor and texture without using the luxury ingredient of eggs!
