It’s no secret that January is my least favorite month. After all, we trade the brightness and excitement of the holiday season for biting cold—and not much else. (Seriously, Wisconsin boasts a “feels like” temperature of -10 degrees Fahrenheit as I write this.)

To get through this frigid season, I turn to cozy meals. January is when I rely on soups, stir-fries and nourishing comfort foods. Of course, a sweet treat once in a while helps, too—and I just found the ultimate indulgence for winter 2025.

Say hello to Levain Bakery’s coffee toffee cookies. These new behemoth bakes are the pick-me-up we all need to get through even the darkest days of winter.

Levain Coffee Toffee Cookies

This dark and decadent cookie is the best Levain treat I've ever tried! It's the ideal balance of sweet and slightly savory.

What are Levain Bakery’s coffee toffee cookies?

If you’re not already familiar with Levain cookies, they are massive and packed to the brim with mix-ins. They’re famous for a signature chocolate chip walnut bake that I firmly believe everyone should try at least once in their life.

The coffee toffee cookie has a similar footprint to other Levain cookies but boasts a new flavor profile. A deep, dark chocolate espresso dough caresses chunks of caramelized chocolate-covered toffee for a sinfully decadent bite. These cookies are rich and perfect for pairing with a cup of coffee.

How We Tested Them

I’ve been lucky enough to test several Levain cookie deliveries. And of the eight or so flavors I’ve tried in both seasonal and signature assortments, the new coffee toffee flavor is my favorite.

The 4-pack arrived in the signature blue Levain box. Per usual, the cookies were beautifully packaged in cellophane and ribbon with nary a crumb out of place. (This gift-ability is what helped Levain secure a spot on our best cookie clubs list.)

I was instantly awed by this cookie’s color. The chocolate espresso hue was so dark it was almost black, similar to an Oreo’s complexion. I could see pockets of toffee poking through—which was enough to pique my interest and cut in for a bite.

Since Levain cookies are so big, I always quarter them for sharing. I picked up a fourth and immediately was transported to rich, chocolaty heaven. These cookies are decadent. The quality of the ingredients shines, and I love that the coffee toffee flavor isn’t cloyingly sweet. The dough itself even has a subtle umami flavor, while the chocolate-covered toffee is crunchy and sugary. Just a few bites of this cookie are all you need for a satisfying mid-day pick-me-up or after-dinner treat.

Plus, they can be warmed in the oven for a soft, gooey texture. Simply pop in at 350 degrees for 3-5 minutes or until warm. (Pro tip: After heating, serve with a scoop of your favorite ice cream!)

And, if you want to draw out the sweet fun all winter long, Levain cookies freeze beautifully. Simply pop them in a freezer-safe bag, then let thaw before serving. (You can also warm them in the oven from frozen; it will just take longer to achieve a gooey texture.)
