Johnsonville Recalls 48,371 Pounds of Pork Products Due to Possible Contamination

The products may be contaminated with a "foreign matter." Yikes!

Last week, it was Perdue chicken nuggets. Now, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced that 48,371 pounds of frozen Johnsonville pork patty products have been recalled. The reason? The products may be contaminated with black rubber.

Here’s what to look for

Not every Johnsonville sausage is affected. (Whew!) The recalled products are labeled “Johnsonville Grillers Cheddar Cheese and Bacon Flavor.” The products were packaged on September 27, October 17 and October 18, 2018 and have establishment number “34225” on the carton.

Look out for the following “Best Flavor By” dates:

  • 24-oz. (1.5 lbs.) plastic bag in a carton of frozen “Johnsonville Grillers CHEDDAR CHEESE & BACON FLAVOR” with “Best Flavor By: 7/24/2019” on the label.
  • 24-oz. (1.5 lbs.) plastic bag in a carton of frozen “Johnsonville Grillers CHEDDAR CHEESE & BACON FLAVOR” with “Best Flavor By: 8/13/2019” on the label.
  • 24-oz. (1.5 lbs.) plastic bag in a carton of frozen “Johnsonville Grillers CHEDDAR CHEESE & BACON FLAVOR” with “Best Flavor By: 8/14/2019” on the label.

The Johnsonville products were shipped to grocery stores and other retail locations across the country. You can compare what’s in your freezer with the PDF label here.

Your level of risk

Johnsonville believes that the black rubber poses minimal risk, but doesn’t want to take a chance with consumers’ health. No adverse reactions have been reported yet; however, if you start to feel sick, contact a healthcare provider.

It seems like there have been a lot of recalls lately. Here’s an explanation from the FDA.

What are the next steps?

The most important thing to do is a “freezer check.” You want to make sure that none of the Johnsonville Grillers are hiding in the back. (Here’s how to clean out your freezer like a boss.) If you find a recalled package, toss it or return it to the grocery store for a refund.

If you have more questions about the recall, please contact Johnsonville Consumer Relations at (888) 556-2728.
