How to Make Frozen Yogurt WITHOUT an Ice Cream Machine

You don't have to shell out for a machine to have a summer favorite. Try this frozen yogurt recipe without an ice cream maker.

As much as we love homemade ice cream, frozen yogurt is the low-calorie, high-flavor treat that has us psyched for summer. It’s a light treat you can indulge in without putting a dent in your diet.

Everything You Need Is Right in Your Kitchen

Plenty of homemade fro-yo recipes call for an ice cream machine, but making it without one is much easier than you think. You can get that creamy texture with just a blender and your freezer. Here’s your new go-to frozen yogurt recipe without an ice cream maker or food processor.

You don’t need an ice cream maker to make homemade soft-serve, either!

How to Make Peach Frozen Yogurt

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh or frozen unsweetened sliced peaches, thawed
  • 1 envelope unflavored gelatin
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 cups (16 ounces) vanilla yogurt

Instructions

Step 1: Blend Your Peaches

First, throw your peaches into a blender. Cover and process until pureed, then set aside for later.

Pro Tip: Frozen fruit tastes great in all kinds of recipes, but fresh fruit delivers that same, tangy sweetness you want without the “freezer taste.” Try this recipe with fresh peaches.

Step 2: Cook Gelatin Mixture

In a small saucepan, sprinkle the gelatin over cold water and let stand for 1 minute. Stir in the sugar, then cook the mixture over low heat. All gelatin and sugar should be dissolved.

Step 3: Mix It All Together

In a large bowl, use a hand mixer to combine your yogurt, peach puree and gelatin mixture until blended. Pour it all into an ungreased 9-in. square dish, then cover and freeze for 3-4 hours or until partially set.

Step 4: Finish It Off

Remove the dish from the freezer and cut your partially set fro-yo into pieces. Place the pieces in a large bowl and beat on medium speed with a hand mixer until smooth. Transfer the frozen yogurt to a freezer container and freeze until firm.

Pro Tip: How do you keep frozen yogurt from crystallizing? Press some parchment paper into the top of your fro-yo before freezing. Make sure to freeze for 2 hours minimum or overnight until fully hardened.

Is Frozen Yogurt Better Than Ice Cream?

In a manner of speaking, yes. While we love the classic, creamy taste of ice cream, frozen yogurt is the healthier choice. Frozen yogurt delivers the same sweetness with less of the sugar. For an even healthier alternative, you can use Greek yogurt in the recipe above. Packed with probiotics, giving up your standard ice cream in favor of frozen Greek yogurt will benefit your health in the long run.
