There’s nothing quite like the smell of frozen waffles in the toaster. This breakfast is especially good when paired with plenty of syrup and fresh fruit. But gluten-free waffle fans need to check their freezers right now, because Van’s has announced a recall of its Gluten Free Original Waffles.

In a July 3 announcement posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Van’s warns consumers about an undeclared wheat allergen in Gluten Free Original Waffles. If you’re allergic or sensitive to gluten, please need to be cautious to prevent any allergic reactions. Before digging in to any delicious frozen waffle recipes, here’s what to know.

What Caused the Recall?

According to Van’s, “wheat-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of wheat.” In other words, there’s actually gluten in waffles that are labeled gluten-free.

Fortunately, Van’s has already removed the affected product from store shelves, and there are no reports of reactions or illnesses in connection to the recall so far. However, those who have a severe sensitivity to wheat are at risk of a “serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.”

How Do I Know If I Have a Recalled Product?

Any of the recalled products will have a lot code of #UW40193L along with a 1/19/2024 expiration date. Look for both numbers on the side of the product’s packaging. If packages do not have that specific lot code, then they are not part of this recall—those waffles should be safe to eat.

What Should I Do If I Have an Affected Product?

The FDA advises consumers to throw away recalled products or to return them to the store for a refund. For more information, contact Van’s Consumer Affairs at 1-800-323-71117 or visit the Van’s website.

And for now, stick to another grab-and-go option in the morning, like gluten-free breakfast bars.
