Several Brands of Frozen Shrimp Recalled After Reports of Salmonella Risk
Be sure to check that bag of frozen shrimp you bought.
If you’ve recently picked up frozen shrimp from a retailer like Meijer or Whole Foods, you might want to take a second look. Avanti Frozen Foods, a major producer of frozen foods, has issued a recall of frozen cooked, peeled and deveined shrimp. While we’ll usually encourage you to get more seafood in your diet, we recommend skipping these shrimp.
What Caused This Frozen Shrimp Recall?
At least six people have reportedly fallen sick with salmonella poisoning after eating this cooked frozen shrimp. According to the FDA, it previously tested frozen cooked shrimp imported by Avanti Frozen Foods and found that it contained salmonella.
Though the company destroyed the previous shipment and took steps to prevent future contamination, the current outbreak caused the FDA to issue the recall based on their previous tests.
