Breyers makes one of the most popular vanilla ice creams in the country. The flavor is called “Natural Vanilla,” but the recipe contains no plant-based vanilla at all. No wonder it didn’t win our taste test of the best vanilla ice cream.

Naturally, the false advertising led to a class action lawsuit, and Breyers has agreed to settle to the tune of $8.85 million. If you bought any size of Breyers Natural Vanilla ice cream between April 21, 2016 and August 14, 2024, you may qualify for a payout.

Note that Breyers’ parent company, Unilever, has denied any wrongdoing. The class action plaintiffs say the company makes its ice cream with a vanilla alternative. But a Breyers spokesperson told Today, “While we don’t comment on litigation, Breyers Natural Vanilla is made with naturally sourced, Rainforest Alliance certified vanilla, and is carefully crafted to deliver the quality and taste people have loved for over 150 years.”

Bottom line? If you love the flavor of Breyers, stick with it. And if you want deep vanilla flavor, consider making homemade vanilla ice cream with real vanilla bean paste or extract.

How to Request a Payout from Breyers

To submit a claim, you’ll need to fill out the claim form.

If you have a valid claim with proof of purchase, you’re eligible for $1 per product purchased, with no limit.

If you don’t have proof of purchase (most people don’t keep their grocery receipts indefinitely, after all), you’re still eligible for $1 per product purchased, with a limit of eight per household. That’s $8—almost enough for a pint of artisanal ice cream.
