What Is the Best Way to Eat Peeps?

Updated: Apr. 15, 2022

It turns out there's a right way to eat Peeps, and this method has a lot of fans. Here's what we discovered on TikTok!

Easter candy taunts us from grocery displays for weeks before the spring holiday. Not just the jelly beans, chocolate bunnies and cartons of malted milk Robin Eggs (my personal favorite), but endless rows of sugary, pastel Peeps.

I can’t say that Peeps are all that popular in my household, and in my experience, you either love them or leave them in the store. But apparently, the great Peeps debate goes even further, because the best way to eat Peeps—according to quite a large following—is well-aged. And by well-aged, we mean totally stale.

You read that right, people intentionally let Peeps get stale before they eat them!

Fresh Peeps offer both the crunch of sugar and the soft, pillowy texture of a puffed marshmallow. Yet, as we learned from HuffPost, a lot of people actually prefer to air out packages of Peeps for several days before eating them. Apparently, the chewy, somewhat tacky texture is preferable over the otherwise soft marshmallow! And as you can see in the TikTok above, you can let your Peeps get stale by simply slicing a few holes in the plastic packaging and letting them sit out on the counter for a few days.

Other Fun Ways to Eat Peeps

Stale Peeps not doing it for you? You can always try sticking them in the fridge overnight, or give them a quick spin in the microwave (though be careful with that one, you might leave yourself with a mess). We’ve gathered a couple more suggestions from The Daily Meal, too:

  • Top homemade cupcakes: Peeps don’t have to be just for Easter. Adorn your home-baked treats year-round with the bright marshmallows.
  • Make Peeps pops: If you like Starbucks’ cake pops, you have to try this. Stick some Peeps on a lollipop stick, dip them in melted chocolate and decorate.
  • Concoct some Peeps cocktails: Easter brunch could definitely use a pop of color. Slice a slit in the bottom of your Peeps and garnish those mimosa glasses!
