Finding the Best Hummus
When you’re tasked to bring a snack to a party, many of us reach for hummus, and for good reason! This chickpea-tahini dip is healthy and goes great with tortilla chips, veggies, pitas and more. As with any packaged snack, though, there are good options and ones that leave a little something to be desired. At the Taste of Home Test Kitchen, we never want to show up to a party with a lackluster dip (you won’t have to worry about that with these recipes), so we put ten brands of hummus to the test in efforts to find the best one. Our panel of editorial and culinary experts judged these hummuses according to these three standards:
Flavor
Consistency
Appearance
Taste of Home
Our panel looked for a hummus that was flavorful—not too tangy, not too bland—with a nice consistency and appetizing appearance. With the right combination of these traits, we’re confident your snack spread will be a hit. We’re also sure that the best hummus can only make all-star recipes like these Mediterranean nachos even better. So find out which brands we’ll be dunking into.

First Place: Kirkland
Our top spot went to Kirkland, a Costco-exclusive brand. This hummus gave us a nice smooth texture with spot-on consistency—not to thin or thick. Our Test Kitchen panel loved the balanced flavor. There was a great tahini taste with just a bit of tang making it an interesting dip on its own and a great addition to any snack tray or lunch box.
2.4-oz. single-serve cups sold in packs of 20; available exclusively at Costco.
Second Place: Park Street Deli
Another one of our favorites came from Aldi’s Park Street Deli brand. This hummus had great consistency and a smooth (but not overly smooth) texture. Testers also admired it for its exceptional creamy flavor. This brand gave us a great basic hummus that would be perfect for dressing up with a few fresh herbs and spices.
$2.29 for a 10-oz. container; available exclusively at Aldi.
Third Place: Cedar’s
Also worthy of a spot in your next snack spread was Cedar’s. This brand definitely gave our panel a bit more tahini flavor, so sesame-lovers, this one’s for you! With that extra bit of tang and acidity, Cedar’s hummus was a bit more interesting than others we tried.
$3.39 for an 8-oz. container; available at select grocers nationwide.

My family loves pasta salads, but usually they have too much mayonnaise or oily dressing. Using hummus gives this dish a great taste and texture, while also increasing its nutritional profile.
