The Best Confetti Cake Mix Might Surprise You

Think you know the best confetti cake mix? We tested four big names—Funfetti included—to find our favorite. The taste test results just might shock you!

If you’re like me, when you think birthday cake, your mind goes right to confetti cake. How can’t it? These sprinkle-laden cakes just scream celebration and fun. And while you can make this kind of cake from scratch—and you should if you use Christina Tosi’s recipe—chances are most confetti-style cakes you’ve made and eaten come right from a box. And one box in particular: Pillsbury Funfetti.

I’m personally a huge fan of this box mix. I’ve made plenty of Funfetti cakes in my time, and have even done variations on the theme, like these confetti cookies. While I’ve gone shopping for this standard mix, though, I have noticed other brands getting into the sprinkle cake game. It’s hard to imagine that any could beat the original, but I had to test them all just to be sure.

For this test, a handful of Taste of Home staffers and I tried these confetti cake mixes:

  • Annie’s Organic Confetti Cake Mix
  • Duncan Hines Confetti Cake Mix
  • Great Value Extra Confetti White Cake Mix
  • Pillsbury Funfetti Premium Cake and Cupcake Mix

These were our favorites.

Honorable Mention: Great Value

Score: 5.5/10

When it comes to sweets, Walmart’s Great Value brand typically fares very well. It was our absolute favorite chocolate chip cookie dough. This cake mix, however, didn’t fare as well. Based on appearances, Great Value gave us a great classic confetti look. Taste-wise, we found the cake to be nice and sweet (which is what you really want in this kind of cake), but it was also a bit dry and tasted of artificial vanilla. We wouldn’t turn down a cupcake made from this mix at the next bake sale, but we wouldn’t seek this mix out for ourselves.

$0.88 for a 16.5-ounce box; available exclusively at Walmart.

Runner-Up: Pillsbury Funfetti

Score: 7.5/10

It might be hard to believe but Pillsbury’s iconic Funfetti cake mix came in second place here. This isn’t to say that this cake mix wasn’t satisfying. Testers loved the familiar Funfetti flavor, and the cake was sweet and satisfying. It tasted ever so slightly artificial and was a bit dryer than our number one pick, but that didn’t bother any testers—we all enjoyed this classic for exactly what it was. In fact, many samplers said after this test they were really craving a slice of this cake topped off with some canned frosting—here are our faves.

$1.18 for a 15.25-ounce box; available at grocers nationwide.

Best in Show: Duncan Hines

Score: 9/10

Talk about a shakeup: Nobody else could hold a candle to Duncan Hines! This cake got high marks (and a few perfect tens) from testers for its sweet—but not overly sweet—vanilla flavor. But what really stood out to us all was the texture of this cake. It was incredibly light and delicate but still exceptionally moist. This texture is hard to find in any cake let alone a boxed version; we had to sing its praises for that reason alone—though the extra confetti bits didn’t hurt either.

$1.79 for a 15.25-ounce box; available at grocers nationwide.

The Bottom Line

If you’re going to do a confetti cake mix, you have to go with one of the biggest names in baking. Pillsbury and Duncan Hines both offered satisfyingly sweet cakes.

This test converted a few devoted Funfetti fans—myself included. I’ve got a box of Duncan Hines mix in my cupboard right now, just waiting for a quick birthday treat or impromptu celebration. Of course, any of these rainbow sprinkled treats would work, too!
