It’s that most wonderful time of the year—and no, we’re not talking about Thanksgiving, although that’s pretty great, what with the spatchcocked turkey, dressing, sides and pie. No, we’re talking about Black Friday, the day after the feasting, when America gets down to the serious business of shopping for the holidays.

The Black Friday Craze

Black Friday—when retailers provide deep discounts on all sorts of items to lure people off the couch and into their stores—has even spawned a number of ancillary events. There’s Small Business Saturday, where a spotlight shines on, well, small local merchants, and Cyber Monday, a day devoted to shopping strictly online for exclusive deals.

Stores have even gone so far as to start Black Friday festivities a day early, opening for business in the late hours of Thanksgiving night. In recent years, retailers have opened their stores earlier and earlier, playing a game of “top this” with their competitors: “We’ll open at 11 p.m.!” “Well, we’ll open at 8 p.m.!” “Oh, yeah? We’ll open for 36 hours straight! No—48!”

(Psst: Want to know who isn’t open on Thanksgiving this year? We found out.)

Why all the mania? Well, there are fantastic deals to be had, and often the retailers center their promotions around doorbusters, in-demand electronics like TVs and must-have toys, such as the latest video-game console. In fact, a cottage industry has sprung up around these Black Friday deals, with websites touting sneak peeks at retailers’ circulars ahead of the date, so people can plan their go-go-go shopping schedule accordingly.
