308,000 Pounds of Hot Dogs and Sausages Recalled

Before you eat another hot dog or sausage, please be aware of this labeling snafu.

For anyone who plans to grill out, you may want to take a second look at your sausages. 308,430 pounds of ready-to-eat beef, pork and turkey hot dog and sausage products have been recalled due to a labeling glitch. The products contain soy—but soy was mistakenly left off of the label. It could be pretty serious for anyone with a soy allergy!
 
Before you start grilling, here’s everything you need to know:

What products are affected?

The US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall of these hot dog and sausage brands, all made by Kent Quality Foods, Inc., a company based in Michigan. The products have been purchased in the following 21 states:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Kentucky
  • Maryland
  • Michigan
  • Mississippi
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Utah
  • Virginia
  • Wisconsin

The recalled products are ready-to-eat hot dogs and sausages made between September 9, 2017, and April 29, 2018, and sold to food distributors and restaurants until at least May 12, when Kent Quality Foods discovered the mislabeling.

What to look out for

Because Kent Quality Foods sells its products only to distributors and professional kitchens, it would be unlikely that you’d find their products on any supermarket shelf. (Unless you shop at places like GFS—then look for “EST. 5694” or “P-5694” inside the USDA inspection mark.)

But you might have ordered these products in a restaurant, and you might have even taken them home as leftovers. Please check your refrigerators and freezers for any leftover hot dog or sausage products that you may have brought home from a restaurant, cafeteria, etc. You’d be best off tossing them if you or someone in your family has a soy allergy or sensitivity.
