When the craving for cookies strikes, making classics like chocolate chip or snickerdoodles are always a dependable go-to. But what if you want something quick, easy and completely fuss-free? The answer is 3-ingredient sugar cookies.

It’s hard to imagine baking delicious cookies with just three ingredients, but this recipe proves it can be done. There’s no need to think about whether you have enough eggs on hand or other ingredients. Truly, all you’ll need to pull this off is butter, flour and sugar.

Directions

Step 1: Cream the butter and sugar

Preheat the oven to 325°F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or grease it with cooking spray.

In a mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until fluffy and well combined.

Mix in all of the flour until the mixture is crumbly. Use your hands to finish mixing and bring together the dough.

Step 3: Scoop and bake

Use a cookie dough scoop to divide the dough into small balls. Gently roll the dough for each cookie, and slightly flatten it in your hands. If you plan to use sprinkles, pour them into a shallow bowl and dip one side of the cookies in the sprinkles.

Place the discs of dough on the prepared cookie sheet spaced evenly apart, as these cookies do spread while baking. Bake the cookies for 14 minutes until lightly golden brown. Once the cookies are done, remove them from the oven and allow them to cool on the stovetop for five minutes before transferring to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Can you add extra ingredients to 3-ingredient sugar cookies?

Sure! Technically that won’t make them 3-ingredient sugar cookies, but consider adding vanilla extract, almond extract or even peppermint extract to the mix. Or, add in your favorite sprinkles or mini chocolate chips.

Why is the dough so crumbly?

The trick is to be sure you’re bringing the dough together after the flour is added. It certainly will be crumbly, but working it with your hands makes all the difference.

What’s the texture like with 3-ingredient sugar cookies?

Once the cookies are baked and cooled, you’ll end up with a flavorful treat with great texture. It’s a sugar cookie on the crispier side around the edges, similar to a shortbread cookie. Once you take a bite, you’ll find a soft center. The whole cookie absolutely melts in your mouth.

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy, 5-7 minutes. Gradually beat in flour until crumbly. Press dough together with hands until it holds together when pressed. Shape into 1-in. balls and flatten slightly; place 2 in. apart on greased or parchment-lined baking sheets.
  2. Bake until very lightly browned, 12-14 minutes. Cool on pans 5 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool completely.
