Taste of Home
When I was 10 years old, the only thing I wanted to be for Halloween was a carrot. Not that I was particularly wild about carrots at that age—and I was a few years away from my short-lived stint as a vegetarian. I just, for reasons I can’t recall, desperately wanted to spend one of my last years going house-to-house begging for candy while dressed as a walking, talking, 4.5-foot-tall carrot.
I was a weird kid.
Thankfully, I had an incredibly sweet mom who was a heck of a seamstress (and who didn’t bat an eye when I put in my unconventional costume request). She put her talent and ingenuity to the test, and created the custom carrot costume of my preteen dreams. And it was glorious.
I think about that costume often, and scratch my head as to why I was so hard set on root-vegetable role-play. Yet now, more than 20 years later, as I browse through Halloween shops for costume ideas, I find comfort in the sheer magnitude of the food-related costumes available, ready to purchase with the click of a mouse (no sewing skills required).
Maybe I wasn’t so weird. Maybe I was just ahead of the curve. Maybe there are other people out there just as food-obsessed as I’ve been most of my life. Whatever the case, whether you’re sushi-obsessed or bonkers about bananas, there’s a food-themed Halloween costume out there for you. Even if you’re as carrot-crazy as I was. (And if you are, I have a feeling you’re going to love any of these super-delicious carrot recipes.)
What goes better together than peanut butter and jelly? If you think you and a partner are sweeter than the sandwich, you know what time it is.
You’ll look snappy and sweet in this garden-inspired costume.
Just make sure to ditch it before Thanksgiving, lest hungry relatives confuse you for the real deal.
Not to be corny, but anyone who sees you donned in this veggie-themed costume will be smiling from ear to ear.
You don’t need chopsticks to pick up this takeout-inspired costume.
Show everyone at the Halloween party you’re a big dill.

Is it a veggie? Is it a fruit? Who cares, when you’re rocking this round, red tomato costume?
I mean, it’s not homemade, but it’s still pretty great.
Couldn’t you just eat this teeny-weenie costume right up?
Somehow even sweeter than the real thing. (Though these desserts come pretty close!)
Pair it with the adult version above, and that’s a whole bunch of cuteness.
Whether they like their ‘mallow burnt or golden toasty, kids can agree it’s almost as fun to wear their favorite campfire treat as it is to eat it.

Turn your dog into the glimmering tropical fruit of his dreams.
I’m willing to bet your dog has never tried sushi, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t look darn cute dressed up as a nigiri roll.
It doesn’t get sweeter than when Fido’s all snuggled up in a cupcake sweater. And that hat? That’s just the cherry on top.
The only thing that makes your cat more ecstatic about wearing this pizza costume is the exact moment you take it off.
Even if you’re not a bona fide foodie, dressing up as your favorite fruit, treat or sandwich shows off your goofy side on this ghoulish holiday. And although these costumes aren’t homemade, if you show up dressed as your favorite food while bringing one of these spooky-good Halloween snacks, you’ll make the party doubly delicious.
