Edible Petals

Is it true that some flowers used to decorate cakes are edible? If so, what types are they? —F.R., Canterbury, Connecticut

Yes, some garden-fresh flowers are fine for decorating desserts and garnishing soups, beverages and other foods. They can also be added to salads. Only edible or nontoxic blossoms should be used. Some of these flowers include daylilies, marigolds, scented geraniums, impatiens, lavender, lilac petals, nasturtiums, pansies, rose petals and violets. Be sure to use flowers that have not been chemically treated or sprayed.
