Eating healthier came with a bonus for Trina Bigham of Fairhaven, Massachusetts. It earned her $500.00 and an appearance on national TV!

Our judges awarded her nutritious Colorful Chicken ’n’ Squash Soup the Grand Prize in our recent “Soup’s On!” recipe contest. Later, Trina showed the secret to her soup success on “The Early Show” on CBS, along with Taste of Home Editor In Chief Catherine Cassidy. (That’s Trina, at right, with Harry Smith of The Early Show and Catherine.)

The Early Show and Taste of Home were kicking off a new partnership. After each recipe contest, The Early Show will have one of the winners on to show her (or his) prize-winning recipe. Catherine will join the winner, offering tips on ingredients and techniques. Other wining recipes from a given contest will also be shown on the show.

According to Catherine, Taste of Home judges liked Trina’s soup because it tastes wonderful but has few ingredients and comes together very quickly. The fact that it's so easy to prepare really clenched it, Catherine said.

Trina says she started making the soup a couple of years ago, when she decided to start cooking healthier for her family—husband Chai and their three children, Kai, 19; Elle, 17; and Brennan, 15. She prefers to make most meals from scratch. She even makes her own yogurt, mayonnaise and ketchup and uses mostly organic fruits and vegetables.

Inspired by her trip to New York to appear on “The Early Show,” Trina plans to use her “soup-er” prize money for yet another excursion.
