Pineapple Beef Kabobs
I first tried this recipe after reading a similar one in a medical magazine in my doctor's office. It's easy, colorful, and the basting helps keep the kabobs juicy and tender.
—Marguerite Shaeffer, Sewell, New Jersey

Grilled Sweet Onions
These onions are so delicious, we prepare them all year long—on the grill in summer, or in an oven preheated to 350° for the same amount of time in winter. A small salad, a slice of bread…and you've got a great light meal.
—Mary Bilke, Eagle River, Wisconsin

Barbecue Italian Sausages
The tangy barbecue sauce found here is fast, flavorful and extremely versatile. It's fantastic on sausages, but don't stop there; give it a try on ribs or with pulled pork.

Italian Muffuletta
I first made this hearty sandwich for my husband, friends and family who were helping to build our deck. It was a big hit, and I've made it several times since then. It also makes a quick and impressive summer party entree!
—Dana Schmitt, Ames, Iowa

Watermelon Bombe
I can't count the times I've made this wonderful dessert. It's a favorite at our summer barbecues. People think you really fussed, but it couldn't be easier—and there are never any leftovers!
—Mary Ann Dell, Phoenixville, Pennsylvania

Star-Spangled Shortcake
Celebrate Independence Day with this patriotic treat dreamed up by our home economists. Star-shaped corn muffins are terrific when topped with ice cream and colorful berries.

It's a snap to give your Fourth of July picnic some festive flair with these fun (and fast!) ideas:

  • Make party favors by tying together some sparklers (if they're allowed) with red, white and blue ribbons.
