Holiday Entertaining Tips

  • We feed a lot of people at Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner, so my sisters and I always set up a big buffet on the kitchen counter. We put each side dish in a slow cooker (mashed potatoes, scalloped corn, squash, gravy and so forth) to keep everything warm. Guests bring the breads, rolls, salads and pies. If someone arrives late, they still can have a hot delicious meal.

  • Instead of simply saying grace at our Thanksgiving dinner, each person around the table takes a turn to state what they're thankful for.   • I use a king-size quilt as my Thanksgiving tablecloth. During dinner, each person shares something for which they're thankful, then lights the votive candle at their place setting. Before long, the table is beautifully lit. At the end of the meal, we write our names on the quilt with permanent markers. Then I wash the quilt and tuck it away. The next year, young and old alike head straight to the table to find their names from previous years. That cozy Thanksgiving tablecloth has become a wonderful memento.

  • You can use cutout cookies to make edible place cards for your Thanksgiving dinner table.

    Bake and cool the cookies as directed. Fill a pastry bag with your favorite white frosting. Using a No. 1, 2, or 3 round tip, write your guests names on the cookies. Let the frosting dry; store in a single layer in an airtight container at room temperature. Before guests arrive, set place card cookies on dinner plates.
