of Simple & Delicious
If you enjoy baking bread, you’ll love the January/February 2008 issue of Simple & Delicious featuring a spread of breads. Along with those fresh-from-the-oven loaves, you may want to try some of these full-flavored butters and spreads for a mouth-watering treat on a cold winter day.
This tangy Orange Rhubarb Spread is easy to make and tastes especially good on hot, buttered cinnamon toast. The recipe, from Betty Nyenhuis of Oostburg, Wisconsin, makes enough to enjoy and share with family or friends.
"My family always requests this light, tender Sour Cream Lemon Bread with a hint of lemon and creamy lemon spread," says Barbara Strickler from Syracuse, Indiana. This loaf complements almost any meal. Serve slices with the creamy lemon spread for an early-morning treat or a late-night snack.
The thing that inspires most of Karen Bunzow’s recipes in her Saginaw, Michigan kitchen is getting an item that she doesn’t know what to do with and trying to use it up. When her brother gave her several jalapeno peppers, it was the beginning of Jalapeno Cranberry Jelly.
It’s easy to add maple flavor to the breakfast table with this rich Maple Butter from Kathy Scott of Hemingford, Nebraska. Slather the butter on piping-hot pancakes, waffles and toast—your family will love it!
A simple mix of three ingredients makes this delicious Honey Cinnamon Butter a snap to mix together. "Serve it up alongside muffins, toast, bagels, scones, French toast or pancakes," says Sue Seymour of Valatie, New York.
The only thing better than homemade bread hot from the oven is a slice of it spread with this zesty Herb Butter! "The fresh herbs make a little of this butter go a long way—you’ll find you use less but still get great flavor," says Jill Smith from Irmo, South Carolina. "It’s also a wonderful potato topper."
