Our Test Kitchen developed this spicy, salt-free alternative to packaged taco seasoning. Stir it into dips or ground beef, sprinkle on chicken or wherever you want a Southwestern flair.

Ingredients

  • 4 teaspoons dried minced onion
  • 3 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

Nutritional Facts

1/4 teaspoon: 7 calories, 0g fat (0g saturated fat), 0mg cholesterol, 15mg sodium, 1g carbohydrate (0g sugars, 0g fiber), 0g protein .

Directions

  1. In a small bowl, combine all ingredients. Store in an airtight container in a cool dry place for up to 1 year. Yield: 3 tablespoons.
Editor's Note: Not all chili powders are alike, and salt levels vary greatly. Ingredients are listed in descending order on package labels. Check your chili powder label to ensure that salt is not listed as one of the first three ingredients.

"I like having this recipe, because I can control how hot I want my taco meat. I added 4 teaspoons to ground chicken, and it was just spicy enough for my soft tacos. My husband enjoyed this recipe."

"I added 3 Tbs. to 1 lb. of ground beef, it was good but I like it a little more spicy so I added a few shakes of Mrs. Dash; Southwest Chipotle no salt seasoning. mmm good Best Taco I have had since I have been on this low sodium diet. Thank You for this recipe. 5 Stars."

"Excellent! I don't think I'll ever buy packaged taco seasoning again. I used a real onion and left out the 4 tbsp of dried minced onion. Also, I added a little more cayenne pepper and red pepper flakes to add some spice. So good!!!"
