Sweet Potato Pie Recipe

This creamy dessert is subtly spiced and slices beautifully! -North Carolina Sweet Potato Commission
TOTAL TIME: Prep: 10 min. Bake: 50 min. + cooling YIELD:6-8 servings

Ingredients

  • 1/3 cup butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 3/4 cup evaporated milk
  • 2 cups mashed sweet potatoes
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 unbaked pastry shell (9 inches)

Directions

  • 1. In a bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs; mix well. Add milk, sweet potatoes, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt; mix well. Pour into pie shell. Bake at 425° for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 350°; bake 35-40 minutes longer or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool. Store in refrigerator. Yield: 6-8 servings.

"This turned out totally yummy

I subbed nut milk, added fresh ginger and made a cookie crumb crust; everything else is as listed.
While it baked, I was dubious because it sort of smelled like bubble gum, but once it cooled, it had a whole new aroma.
Tasted great, slices beautifully. Topped mine with yogurt."

"For Sweet Potato Pie newbies, or those who didn't care for this recipe, it isn't supposed to be as heavily spiced as pumpkin. Fresh sweet potatoes are better than canned "yams". Also, if you bake your potatoes instead of boiling, you won't have to worry as much about a soggy crust."

"I've made many sweet potato pies over the years and this is by far the best recipe I've ever used. I didn't change any ingredients. BTW you may need to increase your baking time depending on your altitude and your own oven. I increased baking time by ten minutes and it was perfect. If you are a novice pie crust maker, I'd suggest the Crisco pie crust recipe. It's my standby pie crust and super easy. Thank you for this great recipe."

"I've made 4 ot these, and they are prrfect. This recipe keeps the filling very light and it does not sink after baking. It is very good but be sure to bake your sweet potatoes until the sugar carmelizes, and let them sit overnight before removing the skin and pulping. This will make the pies taste super super good and sweet."

"Delicious ! I used our Texas Roadhouse left over Sweet Pots; removed the drier portions and mashed them very well. I may skip Pumpkin Pie for Thanksgiving !

My gas oven, which is not particularly "fast", only took 35 min. 15 @ 425 and 20 @ 350. Edges of crust were covered until last 15 min.
This pie has a very creamy, thick custard-like texture.
I've made 100s and 100s of pies in my lifetime & this will be made again and again !!!!"

"I used this to make my first sweet potatoe pie. Mine turned out amazing and I am so proud of myself. My husband said "they are selling quality". I did change the recipe a little....

I baked the sweet potatoes so they'd retain their natural sweetness and not absorb too much water. I also added a half cup light brown sugar. I doubled the vanilla, cinnamon, and added an extra pinch of nutmeg. Lol! Great starter recipe, just taste and add until its where u want it to be."

"This is my first time ever making/ ever having sweet potato pie so I don't know what to compare with. I just felt like it lacked flavor, maybe more spice would be needed? "Best PIE we've ever eaten! It was so creamy and custard-y and delicious! I steamed the sweet potatoes by roasting them in foil, then I mixed all ingredients in the blender for a smooth, creamy pie filling. Great recipe, this will be a go-to for many years to come!"

"Fabulous!!! I used white sweet potato, instead of the standard orange yam, and it came out most excellent! White sweet potatoes are a bit sweeter and the flesh is a bit finer, like a regular baking potato. I look forward to the next time, where I will use the orange yam instead."

"I made it, everyone loves it, and I make it a lot when the sweet potato harvest is in. I can honestly say this is the best sweet potato pie recipe I have ever tried. The only minor problem was that the filling is a little too much so if you aren't careful you can spill the filling while you put it in the oven. But still, very very good!"
