Sweet and Saucy Chicken Recipe

I can't remember were this recipe came from, but I've been making it for several years. Everyone who tries it enjoys it. When the chicken is done cooking, it's so tender it falls off the bone.—Mrs. Patricia Weir, Chilliwack, British Columbia
TOTAL TIME: Prep: 30 min. Cook: 6 hours YIELD:6 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 broiler/fryer chicken (4 pounds), cut up and skin removed
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 1/3 cup white vinegar
  • 1/3 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon dried minced onion
  • 1 teaspoon prepared mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • Hot cooked rice or egg noodles, optional

Directions

  • 1. Place chicken in a 3-qt. slow cooker. In a small saucepan, combine brown sugar and flour. Stir in the water, vinegar and soy sauce. Add the ketchup, onion, mustard, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 1-2 minutes or until thickened.
  • 2. Pour over chicken. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or until chicken juices run clear. Serve with rice or noodles if desired. Yield: 6 servings.

"This had a good taste but my sauce came out really runny. When I cooked it on the stove it was thick but thinned out during the crock pot cooking process. I followed the recipe as written other then I used boneless chicken breasts."

"This was awesome. My husband and I ate this delicious chicken until we were stuffed! Only made two changes. I did not have any white vinegar, so I used regular apple cider vinegar and since we do not eat dark meat, I used boneless, skinless chicken breasts and wings. Also, the sauce was absolutely delicious over the rice."

"I used boneless chicken thighs. I found it to be almost too sweet, but that could have been from using dark brown sugar. If I make it again, I'll try it with light brown sugar. It was very easy to make. I layered the chicken with the sauce and served it over noodles."

"This is a very delicious meal. The chicken just falls off the bones it is so tender and moist. The sauce accents rice perfectly. It is one that I will make again and again! I did double the sauce so that I would have extra for the rice and because I did not have white vinegar I used apple cider vinegar instead but it was still wonderful."

"This was some of the best chicken I've ever cooked. I'm not usually a big fan of chicken because I find it to be dry but I thought this might be a recipe my husband would like so I gave it a chance. I'll be making it often. The chicken fell off the bone and was so tender. And the sauce is delicious! I was a little concerned because I have to use gluten-free flour blends so I wasn't sure it would thicken it enough. It definitely did and served over gluten-free egg noodles...YUM! My husband in on his third helping as I type this."

"Don't know what I did wrong. I followed directions except used boneless, skinless chicken breasts but my sauce turned out as thin as water -- not at all like the picture. When I boiled it it thickened up like the recipe said, but after sitting in the crockpot with the chicken it was like water. Other than that, the sauce tasted good and chicken was tender. I will use the recipe again because I like the ease of using a crockpot. Would welcome any comments/ideas regarding how to get the sauce to look like the picture. Was everyone else's thin also? Thanks."

"My husband doesn't like bone-in chicken, so I used 6 breast cutlets. Very good. I increased the soy to 1/2 cup and used 1 tsp onion powder instead of dried minced onion. I served it over orzo. Other than that, I didn't change a thing. I'll definitely be making this again."

"I made this chicken and my husband and his family loved it. I used a package of chicken thighs to have the dark meat and followed the rest of the recipe to a T. Had it in the slow cooker for about 5 hours and the chicken was so moist and delicious - it fell right off the bone. Yum! Very easy recipe that was delicious. This is a keeper!"
