- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 to 2 tablespoons canola oil
- 3 cans (28 ounces each) baked beans
- 1-1/2 teaspoons ground mustard
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
- 3/4 to 1 cup maple syrup
- In a Dutch oven or large kettle, cook onion in oil until tender. Add the beans, mustard and garlic salt. Cook over medium heat until bubbly, stirring occasionally. Add maple syrup; heat through, stirring occasionally. Yield: 8-10 servings.

"I prepared this recipe and I did make adjustments to it! I just used 2 cans (1 lb. each) of Bush's brand baked beans: one home-style type & 1 vegetarian-type & I used 2 Tbsp. canola or vegetable oil, 1 medium onion, finely chopped, 1-1/2 tsp. spicy brown prepared mustard, 1 tsp. garlic salt, and 1-1/4 cup diced roast pork. I used just 1/4 cup maple syrup! I BAKED the beans in a 1-3/4-qt. greased casserole dish, uncovered, for 1 hour. Of course, I stirred the mixture well to combine the flavors! My Mom taste-tested this dish & told me that it was very good! I also sampled the beans after I'd baked them! I think that the beans had a HINT of the maple syrup-I'm finding out that sometimes, dishes take some time to mature! I'd probably add maybe 2 Tbsp. ketchup or BBQ sauce the next time I prepare these beans! But all in all, this is a very creative way to dress up ordinary baked beans!
