I came up with this recipe in a pinch after running out of baked beans at our oldest daughter's birthday party. I dressed up canned beans with maple syrup and a few other ingredients to produce this sweet, saucy version that tastes like homemade. They're so easy to fix that I rarely make baked beans from scratch anymore.

  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 3 cans (28 ounces each) baked beans
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons ground mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 3/4 to 1 cup maple syrup

Nutritional Facts

1/2 cup: 168 calories, 3g fat (1g saturated fat), 6mg cholesterol, 513mg sodium, 34g carbohydrate (21g sugars, 5g fiber), 4g protein.


  1. In a Dutch oven or large kettle, cook onion in oil until tender. Add the beans, mustard and garlic salt. Cook over medium heat until bubbly, stirring occasionally. Add maple syrup; heat through, stirring occasionally. Yield: 8-10 servings.

"I prepared this recipe and I did make adjustments to it! I just used 2 cans (1 lb. each) of Bush's brand baked beans: one home-style type & 1 vegetarian-type & I used 2 Tbsp. canola or vegetable oil, 1 medium onion, finely chopped, 1-1/2 tsp. spicy brown prepared mustard, 1 tsp. garlic salt, and 1-1/4 cup diced roast pork. I used just 1/4 cup maple syrup! I BAKED the beans in a 1-3/4-qt. greased casserole dish, uncovered, for 1 hour. Of course, I stirred the mixture well to combine the flavors! My Mom taste-tested this dish & told me that it was very good! I also sampled the beans after I'd baked them! I think that the beans had a HINT of the maple syrup-I'm finding out that sometimes, dishes take some time to mature! I'd probably add maybe 2 Tbsp. ketchup or BBQ sauce the next time I prepare these beans! But all in all, this is a very creative way to dress up ordinary baked beans! "I received compliments on this recipe and I needed a really fast recipe so this did the trick. I would probably add less maple syrup next time. I thought it was a little too sweet"
