Savory Party Bread Recipe

It's impossible to stop nibbling on warm pieces of this cheesy, oniony bread. The sliced loaf fans out for a fun presentation. —Kay Daly, Raleigh, North Carolina
TOTAL TIME: Prep: 10 min. Bake: 25 min. YIELD:8 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 unsliced round loaf sourdough bread (1 pound)
  • 1 pound Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup chopped green onions
  • 2 to 3 teaspoons poppy seeds

Directions

  • 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Cut bread widthwise into 1-in. slices to within 1/2 in. of bottom of loaf. Repeat cuts in opposite direction. Cut cheese into 1/4-in. slices; cut slices into small pieces. Place cheese in cuts.
  • 2. In a small bowl, mix butter, green onions and poppy seeds; drizzle over bread. Wrap in foil; place on a baking sheet. Bake 15 minutes. Unwrap; bake 10 minutes longer or until cheese is melted. Yield: 8 servings.

"I found this recipe in an old Taste of Home at my mother in law's house a long time ago. It was raining, I was bored, and found this while picking through old Taste of Home magazines along with about 6 other recipes (through at least 30 mags.) I made this when I got home and have been making it ever since; never did try any of the others. We are a pretty health-conscious family but everyone makes an exception for the cheesy bread! My son was out of town at a party this weekend and called me for the recipe so he could make it as his contribution to a New Year's Eve party. Everyone who has ever tasted it just raves over it. One of the best recipe shares ever!"

"I made two of these breads for different parties I attended over this past Christmas. Everyone raved about them and needless to say, they were gone in no time. The first one I shredded Ex-sharp chedder cheese, mozzarella cheese and swiss cheese along with the onions etc. Everyone basically forgot about their diets. The second one I made with sunflower seed bread and did the same but also added fresh cooked garlic. Once again, it was eaten up very quickly. Everyone loved them both. Great for parties."

"I made it and it was very good. But my question is the same as another one--how do you eat it. I used sourdough bread and the crust is very thick on the bottom and was very difficult to pull apart. Maybe I will try an Italian bread next . Any other suggestions??"

"I have used this recipe many times. It's easy, quick & there are few ingredients. It is alway difficult not to keep the whole thing to yourself after you hear that timer beep and smell the oniony goodness...yum!

"I've seen quite a few variations on this recipe over the years. The version I made tonight was basically this one, except I couldn't find any sourdough bread and had to use Italian bread, and I forgot to buy Monterey Jack so instead used a mixture of grated provolone, grated mozzarella and grated Parmesan. I also added a minced clove of garlic to the melted butter. Really delicious!"

"Served this for Christmas Eve party. It was a HUGE hit. People raved about how good it was. So easy. Did add 1 tsp of Jarred minced garlic....and....it was fantastic. You won't believe that you can get all the cheese in the bread ..... but you can. I used 1 lb. of 3 cheese Mexican mix. There were only 6 adults and several other appetizers. Still over half the loaf was devoured. Hubby and I heated up (uncovered in the oven at 400 for 15 min) leftovers and it was still incredibly wonderful.

Thank you for this excellent recipe. It is very versatile also. You can use different breads and/or different cheeses at your whim. Enjoy!!"

"This recipe is a keeper! I made 2 of these loaves tonight! I scaled back on the amount, though & I used 2 12-oz. sour dough loaves total! Then I used 1-3/4 cups reduced-fat Cheddar cheese, shredded, 1/4 cup each melted butter, one small onion, finely diced/cut and 1 Tbsp. poppy seeds EACH for the 2 loaves! I placed the cheese more on TOP of the bread and still made those cuts in the loaf as recipe directed! I'd divided the cheese up to use on the 2 loaves, and used the butter mixture individually on each loaf! It worked well for me to scale down on the amount of cheese and butter! I used 2 small YELLOW ONIONS, FINELY DICED/SLICED-one onion for each butter-onion-poppy seed spread! The trick for me is NOT cutting the loaf too deep so that the bread doesn't break! The bread did fan out, BUT NOT TOO MUCH! I have to admit I ate one! I gave the other loaf to my Mom and she said that it was a successful recipe! She really liked it! Kay Daly, THANK YOU for sharing this scrumptious loaf! I used this recipe for this week's recipe challenge: Appetizers for "Cook's Corner"! This bread could even be a meal in itself! "This is yummy and then some. I changed it up and used the cheese I had on hand. Which meant I used muenster on the horizontal cuts and mozzarella on the vertical cuts. "OMG, this is SO good! I cut it in half for just hubby and me, but I could've eaten the entire half loaf by myself! Yum, yum, yum! I omitted the poppy seeds just because I don't really care for them and added some minced garlic instead. I also used Colby Jack cheese because I really like its flavor, but any cheese would be good. Yummy with soup or anything else for that matter! Thanks for sharing!"

"I had my doubts when I first saw this, but I decided to give it a go anyway. I used a marbled colby-jack cheese and omitted the poppy seeds, substituting minced garlic and rosemary instead. Turns out there is only one problem with this recipe--it's not enough! You have to make two, because this disappears in no time! Definitely a hit and definitely a keeper!"

"This is a very tasty twist on just serving up bread. I found however, that it's rather messy to eat. The ladies lunch that I used it for was a little too tidy of an affair for people to dig into the loaf with their fingers and tear off pieces. When the teenagers arrived, however, they polished it off in no time. So, I would make it again for a more casual setting. I didn't have an electric bread knife, but I found freezing the loaf ahead and then cutting into in when it's not completely thawed out makes nice clean cuts as well."

"Oh my goodness! I have made this recipe 3 times now and the last time I made it for our family Christmas appetizer dinner. I had to literally keep hands out of it before it was time to serve!
