Reviews for Savory Party Bread
"Very good! Added some fresh garlic, bacon bits and parsley flakes. Served with dip bc it needed a little something extra"
"I added crumbed and chopped spinach to the butter and green onions and cooked crumbled bacon really good!!"
"I found this recipe in an old Taste of Home at my mother in law's house a long time ago. It was raining, I was bored, and found this while picking through old Taste of Home magazines along with about 6 other recipes (through at least 30 mags.) I made this when I got home and have been making it ever since; never did try any of the others. We are a pretty health-conscious family but everyone makes an exception for the cheesy bread! My son was out of town at a party this weekend and called me for the recipe so he could make it as his contribution to a New Year's Eve party. Everyone who has ever tasted it just raves over it. One of the best recipe shares ever!"
"I made two of these breads for different parties I attended over this past Christmas. Everyone raved about them and needless to say, they were gone in no time. The first one I shredded Ex-sharp chedder cheese, mozzarella cheese and swiss cheese along with the onions etc. Everyone basically forgot about their diets. The second one I made with sunflower seed bread and did the same but also added fresh cooked garlic. Once again, it was eaten up very quickly. Everyone loved them both. Great for parties."
"I can't wait to make this for New Years Eve!! I will eliminate the onion & add garlic YUM!! Thank you for a terrific idea. Me Thinks..... it calls for lots of napkins : ))"
"easy and delicious"
"For picky kiddos, eliminate the poppy seeds and green onion. Instead add crushed garlic to the butter, outstanding!"
"I made it and it was very good. But my question is the same as another one--how do you eat it. I used sourdough bread and the crust is very thick on the bottom and was very difficult to pull apart. Maybe I will try an Italian bread next . Any other suggestions??"
"Wonderful flavors. Will make again for company."
"Have to admit that I haven't made this yet, although it looks and sounds amazing...my question is, how do you serve it? Do people grab hunks off? Does it take two hands to hold-pull off a chunk? Do you slice it? Just looks messy BUT good..."
"I have used this recipe many times. It's easy, quick & there are few ingredients. It is alway difficult not to keep the whole thing to yourself after you hear that timer beep and smell the oniony goodness...yum!My personal touch: add a tsp. of garlic salt or powder!"
"Surprised my family. It not only tasted great but made me look very clever. Loved by all."
"I've seen quite a few variations on this recipe over the years. The version I made tonight was basically this one, except I couldn't find any sourdough bread and had to use Italian bread, and I forgot to buy Monterey Jack so instead used a mixture of grated provolone, grated mozzarella and grated Parmesan. I also added a minced clove of garlic to the melted butter. Really delicious!"
"I like this idea, it was very creative. I just tried this bread with the butter and cheese and it was good."
"I'd forgotten about this recipe until I saw it today while searching for appetizer recipes for our family's New Year's Eve celebration! I used to make this for a meatless Friday meal for our family of 8, & everyone loved it! Didn't change a thing! Some of our kids would dip it in barbeque sauce of Ranch dressing."
"Served this for Christmas Eve party. It was a HUGE hit. People raved about how good it was. So easy. Did add 1 tsp of Jarred minced garlic....and....it was fantastic. You won't believe that you can get all the cheese in the bread ..... but you can. I used 1 lb. of 3 cheese Mexican mix. There were only 6 adults and several other appetizers. Still over half the loaf was devoured. Hubby and I heated up (uncovered in the oven at 400 for 15 min) leftovers and it was still incredibly wonderful.Thank you for this excellent recipe. It is very versatile also. You can use different breads and/or different cheeses at your whim. Enjoy!!"
"Made this for a football party & it was a big hit. So good!! My store didn't have sourdough bread so I used an Italian loaf & it worked fine. I also added a clove of minced garlic. Give this recipe a try...you won't be disappointed!"
"Made this for a party. I changed the cheeses but what a hit this was would definitely make it again."
"awesome. everyone devoured it"
"Excellent, excellent, excellent! I used shredded Italian 5-cheese blend, along with shredded swiss cheese, then sprinkled grated Parmesan over the top (I omitted the poppy seeds). Everyone loved it! I will definitely be adding this recipe to my "Keepers" list!"
"This recipe was soo enjoyed that my husband has banned it! He can't cut back and eat just a little... it's too addictive. I only used 1/2 # of cheese and it was perfectly cheesy and delicious."
"This recipe is a keeper! I made 2 of these loaves tonight! I scaled back on the amount, though & I used 2 12-oz. sour dough loaves total! Then I used 1-3/4 cups reduced-fat Cheddar cheese, shredded, 1/4 cup each melted butter, one small onion, finely diced/cut and 1 Tbsp. poppy seeds EACH for the 2 loaves! I placed the cheese more on TOP of the bread and still made those cuts in the loaf as recipe directed! I'd divided the cheese up to use on the 2 loaves, and used the butter mixture individually on each loaf! It worked well for me to scale down on the amount of cheese and butter! I used 2 small YELLOW ONIONS, FINELY DICED/SLICED-one onion for each butter-onion-poppy seed spread! The trick for me is NOT cutting the loaf too deep so that the bread doesn't break! The bread did fan out, BUT NOT TOO MUCH! I have to admit I ate one! I gave the other loaf to my Mom and she said that it was a successful recipe! She really liked it! Kay Daly, THANK YOU for sharing this scrumptious loaf! I used this recipe for this week's recipe challenge: appetizers for "Cook's Corner"! This bread could even be a meal in itself! The idea of adding garlic is also a great idea, ebramkamp! delowenstein"
"This is yummy and then some. I changed it up and used the cheese I had on hand. Which meant I used muenster on the horizontal cuts and mozzarella on the vertical cuts. I also added a bit of freshly minced garlic to the butter and poppy seeds. I will definitely be making this again, and again, and again......."
"OMG, this is SO good! I cut it in half for just hubby and me, but I could've eaten the entire half loaf by myself! Yum, yum, yum! I omitted the poppy seeds just because I don't really care for them and added some minced garlic instead. I also used Colby Jack cheese because I really like its flavor, but any cheese would be good. Yummy with soup or anything else for that matter! Thanks for sharing!"
"I am sad to say this was awful. All I could taste was onion ."
"We didn't really like it. It was very bland."
"Quick, easy and absolutely delicious."
"Excellent... family loved this bread"
"One would think more work should be required to be this delicious. It is so much better than I expected it would be!"
"I had my doubts when I first saw this, but I decided to give it a go anyway. I used a marbled colby-jack cheese and omitted the poppy seeds, substituting minced garlic and rosemary instead. Turns out there is only one problem with this recipe--it's not enough! You have to make two, because this disappears in no time! Definitely a hit and definitely a keeper!"
"Just simply delicious! Perfect with a simple salad also."
"I made this recently and it was gone in no time! I think I may omit the poppy seeds next time and use a blend of finely minced onion and garlic with Parmesan cheese and then serve with marinara sauce as a dip. It might be a good alternative option."
"I didn't think this would work at all, but it was the hit of the cook-out. Even with substituting multi-grain bread and a Monterey Jack/cheddar cheese blend, it was gone immediately. I can't thank you enough for this recipe!"
"I have been making this recipe for years. It's always fun to eat and my guests always say they can't stop nibblng on it!"
"I made this a number of times years ago to rave reviews and then misplaced the recipe :-( So glad to find it again! It is Wonderful!!"
"EASY, EASY, EASY--and DELICIOUS! I made this for a party and all my friends raved about it. Made 2 loaves and they were gone before I knew it! Everyone wanted the recipe. This one's a keeper!"
"This bread is always a big hit with my family who insists that cheese should be its own food group! It's great paired with soups or anything with a sauce that can be used for dipping."
"My son's best friend would frequently drop by after his football practices and stay for dinner. I often served this bread withsoup. Tom made sure IF there was any bread leftover that it went home with him for a study snack."
"This is one of my favorite appetizer recipes! It is so good! I use whatever cheese I have on hand--cheddar, Colby/Jack, Mozzarella. If I don't have a chunk to slice, I just use shredded and it works well, too."
"Simply Awesome! This bread was so addictive. I added a little more butter, another cup of cheese (stuffing it both inside the slits and over the top), and left off the poppy seeds, and yet, it was still totally awesome. It was a great Super Bowl snack to say the least."
"When you read the recipe it's hard to envision just how good this bread is. It's so simple- but it is wonderfully delicious and guests LOVE it. I made mine with a mix of Colby-jack and sharp white cheddar cheese and I substituted sesame seeds, as I had them on hand. People were requesting the recipe as they were leaving- this bread is that good!"
"Always get compliments on this dish! People beg me to bring it to parties! So easy and so good! Easy to change up ingredients for a different twist! I highly recommend it!!"
"One of the best appies ever...one is not enough."
"This is a very tasty twist on just serving up bread. I found however, that it's rather messy to eat. The ladies lunch that I used it for was a little too tidy of an affair for people to dig into the loaf with their fingers and tear off pieces. When the teenagers arrived, however, they polished it off in no time. So, I would make it again for a more casual setting. I didn't have an electric bread knife, but I found freezing the loaf ahead and then cutting into in when it's not completely thawed out makes nice clean cuts as well."
"I love making this bread for dinner parties. It's so light and yummy, a fun stand in for traditional garlic bread."
"I have served this appetizer many times. Each time it gets rave reviews! Wonderful recipe that I have shared over and over."
"Fantastic! Will be trying some variations as others have mentioned."
"Always a big hit at my house!"
"Forgot to rate it 5 plus"
"This is so simple and so good. Problem once you make or eat this you will want it again soon. I have made a half loaf for my husband and me. I have also made it with pepperjack cheese. Delicious"
"I usually have to make two loaves for a party because the first one is gone so quickly! A great twist is using just garlic butter and mozzarella cheese. YUM!"
"Making it for the first time, I bought a half lb loaf of tuscan bread and followed directions exactly (cutting amounts in half, of course)exc for omitting poppy seeds - rave reviews! Used less cheese, but put it in every cut section. Excellent and SO easy!"
"This is a great appetizer for teenagers and adults. I had to ask the baker at our local grocery store for an uncut round loaf. Great mix of flavors and colorful too! A must try!"
"One of the BEST appetizers EVER. You will not regret making this and it's so so easy."
"Oh my goodness! I have made this recipe 3 times now and the last time I made it for our family Christmas appetizer dinner. I had to literally keep hands out of it before it was time to serve! I eliminate the poppy seeds and add minced garlic to the butter mixture and use pepper jack cheese. AWESOME! I would highly reccommend using an electric knife as that is MUCH easier. Thanks so much for the great recipe!"
"This bread was awesome and there is endless possiblitties on what to add. Thanks TOH!"
"This bread is so good! One year I made them for neighbor gifts, all wrapped in foil and ready for the oven."
"We love this bread! I usually add fresh minced garlic into the butter for extra flavor. Always a hit!"
"I have made this many times and it's delicious. There is never any left!"
"UMMMM This is delicious but to cut back on caloriesjust use 1/2 of the cheese! It is still yummy!"
"This is addictive. For Sunday supper, I make a pot of soup and serve this bread with it - pure comfort food and so satisfying on a cold night. I can't wait to try it with bacon or pepper jack. What a great idea!flaherl"
"Try using pepper jack cheese and/or diced green chilies - really good! This is always a big hit at gatherings."
"I added Real Bacon Bits to this recipe and people went crazy for it. I suggest using an electric knife to make the cuts. 10 times easier and looks great!!!!!"
