DEAR KAREN: Is there a way to soften brown sugar when it's become too hard?
—J.C., Otsego, Michigan

To soften hardened brown sugar, place a slice of bread or an apple wedge with the brown sugar in a covered container for a few days.

If you need it softened quickly, try microwaving it on high for about 20 seconds. Stir and repeat if necessary, but watch carefully because the sugar will begin to melt if it cooks too long. Always store brown sugar in an airtight container.
