This recipe was passed down to me from my mother. These cookies freeze well, but I rarely have the chance to do that—my husband and our two youngsters gobble them up!

  • 2 cups shortening
  • 2 cups packed brown sugar
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups (12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips

2 each: 227 calories, 11g fat (3g saturated fat), 18mg cholesterol, 76mg sodium, 32g carbohydrate (21g sugars, 1g fiber), 2g protein.


  1. In a large bowl, cream shortening and sugars until fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine dry ingredients; add to creamed mixture and mix well. Stir in chocolate chips. Drop by spoonfuls 3-in. apart onto greased baking sheets. Bake at 350° for 8-10 minutes. Yield: 7-8 dozen.
