Hot Water Gingerbread Recipe

Hot Water Gingerbread Recipe

This is a moist, old-fashioned dessert which your family will love!—Marjorie Green, South Haven, Michigan
TOTAL TIME: Prep: 15 min. Bake: 25 min. + chilling YIELD:9 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1 tablespoon butter, softened
  • TOPPING:
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • Whipped topping

Directions

  • 1. Combine flour, sugar, salt, ginger and baking soda; set aside. In a bowl, beat egg, molasses, water and butter until smooth. Gradually add the dry ingredients; beat for 1 minute. Pour into a greased 8-in. square baking pan. Combine the sugar and cinnamon; sprinkle evenly over gingerbread.
  • 2. Bake at 350° for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool completely before cutting. Top each square with whipped topping. Yield: 9 servings.

"This was my first time having anything gingery and it was spectacular! I made it around christmas time and it filled the house with a holiday scent. My family couldnt wait to have a piece. I served it with whipped cream on the side. Be careful with the cinnamon sugar topping.. if you dont watch it it will burn around the sides of your cake. will for sure make over again."

"This was a moist dense gingerbread that needed no alteration, however I used minced fresh ginger and served it with lemon sauce. The entire family requested that it be added to the family favorites recipe. Will make it again and again."
