Patriotic Table Toppers
- Pull out red-and-white-checkered tablecloths or any gingham or denim you've got. Or make your own (shown here) with a plain white tablecloth, mini paint roller and some red paint.
- Use Mason jars, especially the old blue ones, as vases. Fill with water (plus fresh cherries for color), then add white roses, hydrangeas or daisies. For serveware use blue or red speckled enamaleware. Mix in state souvenir plates.
- Pin old (or reproduced) election buttons such as "I Like Ike" or "Keep Cool With Coolidge" to a table runner.
- Hang twinkle lights and garlands of popcorn and cherries or tiny flags.
It's easy and fun to make a treat-filled firecracker.
Cut a paper towel tube in half.
Cut 3 to 4 layers of tissue paper into 10-in. x 10-in. squares. Fasten tissue paper around tube.
Wrap a piece of pipe cleaner around tissue paper at bottom and twist tightly. Then push into tube to hide.
Fill top end of tube with candy. Use thin ribbon to close top. Wrap tube with festive wrapping or craft paper.
For a finishing touch, add a pipe cleaner "fuse" on top, shaping it to look like a star.
