Giving Thanks Pumpkin Centerpiece
Jack-o'-lanterns aren't the only way to decorate a pumpkin. Try engraving a pumpkin this fall instead.
Express your appreciation for everything you've been given this Thanksgiving season by imprinting your sentiments on a brightly colored batch of pretty pumpkins.
First, gather gourds in a variety of shapes and sizes. Think of all you're thankful for, such as health, family, food and friends. Write the words on pumpkins with a black permanent marker.
Using a Creative Versa-Tool or a wood-burning tool, trace over the letters, allowing the tip of the tool to darken the shell of the pumpkin. (See Engraving Gourds at right.) When finished, use a damp paper towel to remove any visible marker lines. The gourds can be prepared several weeks in advance. Use them to decorate mantels, sideboards and your buffet table.
At the end of your Thanksgiving dinner, encourage guests to take a gourd or two home with them.
After writing on the pumpkins with permanent marker, trace over the letters with a wood-burning tool. (We used the Creative Versa-Tool from Walnut Hollow.) The tip of the tool gets extremely hot so it's important to keep it away from you, other people and anything on your work surface. Be sure to read the instructions that come with the tool.
