Ground Beef Gravy Recipe
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 can (14-1/2 ounces) beef broth, divided
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 2 tablespoon dried parsley flakes
- 1 tablespoon dried basil
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon seasoned salt
- 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- Hot mashed potatoes or cooked pasta
- 1. In a large skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Add 1-1/2 cups beef broth, onion, parsley, basil, garlic powder, seasoned salt and pepper. Simmer, uncovered, for 5-10 minutes or until onion is tender.
- 2. In a small bowl, combine cornstarch and remaining broth until smooth. Stir into beef mixture. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. Serve with mashed potatoes or pasta. Yield: 3 cups.
To prevent lumps when thickening with cornstarch, don't mix cornstarch with a hot liquid. Combine it with a cold or room temperature liquid and gradually add it to the hot mixture in a skillet or saucepan.

"Made this last night - I let the onions saute with the burger a few minutes rather than adding the onions, seasonings, and broth in right away. Then I added the seasonings to cook for a minute and then finally added in the broth. I think it enhances the flavors of the herbs a little better that way. I also added about 1/8 tsp of ground cumin for a little smoky flavor, and a small can of mushrooms, drained. I used low-sodium broth. This is definitely a keeper! Next time I'll cut back the parsley - I think 1 Tbsp is enough. I might add some finely diced carrot and/or celery too. Or, I was thinking the addition of a little sour cream or heavy cream would turn this into a nice stroganoff type gravy! But really, it's great as it is and so simple... And - it's picky-hubby-approved!"
"This is an awesome quick weekday dinner recipe. Served over leftover mashed potatoes from Thanksgiving. So easy to prepare and everyone in my family, which covers ages 12-84, loved it!! I didn't have any basil and I did add carrots with the onions but otherwise followed the recipe and it came out great. Definite keeper."

"For a simple recipe, this is very tasty! At first, I was tempted to say "Aw the heck with it" and just use a dry or canned gravy, but I'm glad I didn't! Just a few tweaks - I cut the garlic powder down to 1 teaspoon instead of 1 tablespoon. Otherwise I think the garlic would have been overwhelming. And I added peas to make it a full meal - you could add any veggies you want. Also, next time I will increase the amt of the cornstarch and remaining broth to make a little more gravy. I like the idea someone had of adding French-fried onions at the end. All in all, an above-average busy night's dinner."
