Green Beans with Tomato Sauce Recipe
As an alternative to green bean casserole, serve up a saucy Italian side dish sporting festive red and green colors. Also try this sauce with asparagus, broccoli or Brussels sprouts. —Taste of Home Test Kitchen
- 2 pounds fresh green beans, trimmed and cut in half
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 cans (15 ounces each) tomato sauce
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- Place green beans in a steamer basket. Place basket in a large saucepan over 1 in. of water; bring to a boil. Steam, covered, 8-10 minutes or until crisp-tender. Transfer to a serving bowl.
- Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic; cook and stir until tender. Stir in the remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, 15 minutes. Drizzle over beans. Yield: 8 servings.
