Glazed Butter Cookies

 Glazed Butter Cookies
These cookies are not just for Christmas. I bake them all year, changing cookie cutters for various occasions.—Dorothy Jennings, Waterloo, Iowa

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1-3/4 cups King Arthur Unbleached All-Purpose Flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • GLAZE:
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk
  • Red, green and yellow liquid or paste food coloring

Directions

  • In a small bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat
  • in egg and vanilla. Combine dry ingredients; gradually add to the
  • creamed mixture. Cover and chill for 1 hour or until easy to handle.
  • On a lightly floured surface, roll out to 1/8-in. thickness. Cut with
  • 2-1/2-in. cookie cutters. Place 1 in. apart on ungreased baking
  • sheets. Bake at 350° for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned.
  • Cool on wire racks.
  • In a small bowl, combine confectioners' sugar and milk until smooth.
  • Stir in food coloring. Lightly spread over cooled cookies. Let
