Fresh-baked yeast rolls are always a hit at dinners. To make it easy on the cook, these start in the bread machine. They are arranged in a tree-shape for the yuletide season, but they can also be baked in a 13- x 9-inch baking pan. —Lorri Reinhardt, Big Bend, Wisconsin

  • 1 cup water (70° to 80°)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons dried minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2-1/4 cups bread flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon coarse salt

  1. In bread machine pan, place the first 10 ingredients in order suggested by manufacturer. Select dough setting (check dough after 5 minutes of mixing; add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water or flour if needed).
  2. When cycle is completed, turn dough onto a lightly floured surface; divide into 16 balls. Line a baking sheet with foil and grease the foil. Center one roll near the top of prepared baking sheet. Arrange rolls snugly into four additional rows, adding one more roll for each row, forming a tree.
  3. Center remaining ball under tree for trunk. Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  4. Brush rolls with butter. Combine cheese and Italian seasoning and sprinkle over rolls. Sprinkle with salt. Bake at 350° for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm. Yield: 16 servings.

"I made these delicious rolls today starting off in the bread maker and ending up baking them in the oven as per the recipe instructions. The rolls were light, fluffy and totally delicious. One is not enough. I also got a head start on Christmas design by trying out the tree-shape. Sixteen rolls form a great looking tree. Since I love parmesan cheese I did add a little more to the topping. I bought some Kraft parmesan and mixed it with some fresh parmesan. Next time though I think I'll just stay with the fresh. Just one thing about the yeast. I used Fleischmann's traditional active dry yeast and almost forgot to proof it before putting it in the bread machine. If you are a new cook and using this product you need to stir one packet of the yeast into 1/4 cup warm water (100 F.); add 1 teaspoon sugar and let it stand for 10 minutes before adding to the bread machine. Try this recipe - you won't be disappointed."

"Made this for Bible Study tonight to go along with the Cheeseburger Soup. I did make it in the Christmas tree shape since we are only a week away from Christmas. Everyone loved it. I made it exactly as the recipe said. I will make it again, but next time will add more Parmesan cheese to it."
