Favorite Fish Chowder Recipe

Favorite Fish Chowder Recipe

Economics had a lot to do with what we ate when I was growing up in New Hampshire during the Depression. Money may have been scarce, but fish was plentiful and affordable, so that's how we began eating this dish. When meat rationing came along in World War II, fish chowder again became a staple in our household. Fortunately, my family loved it...it still is one of my favorites!

"Made for Friday night dinner for my family, and we all very much enjoyed. Husband had FOUR bowls! I didn't tell the kids (ages 3 and 7) that they were eating cod, and they ate every drop. I didn't change or add anything to the recipe and was delicious as is. Reminded me of the chowders we had in Cape Cod as a kid. Will add to our normal rotation."

"This recipe is too bland and not thick enough. I cooked some bacon until crisp and set aside. I used the bacon drippings to saute the onion, diced carrots can of diced potatoes and a half bag of broccoli. I added 4 cups of chicken broth and simmered until carrots and broccoli were tender. I added 2 lbs. of cod in pieces. I added 2 cups of half and half and 4 tbls. of flour to thicken. Corn starch could also be used, Seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic and thyme. Added chopped bacon. Delicious!!!!"

"Great chowder. I added 1 can clams and Old Bay seasoning. I also roughly grated 1/2 a carrot and added for some color."

"I made half the recipe for my husband and me, and we ate every last drop for supper--oink. I substituted half of the water with clam juice, and I used a combination of milk and half & half because that was what I had. Very good!"

"finally a recipe for fish chowder the way i grew up on,no thickening it like wallpaper paste, just we only used canned milk because it gave it a better taste.only thing differant is we had common crackers to float on top of our chowder[too expensive now adays]"

"This is a family favorite! It goes together fast and easy and I can easily keep the ingredients on hand for a quick meal. I have made this for guests and always get rave reviews. I use chicken broth instead of water and I use a bit less (maybe 2 - 3 cups) because we like a chowder with less broth. I have also used shrimp and langostino with great results."

"Yummm! This recipe is simple and taste good. I do not like chowder at all. I tried for my husband and it turned out pleasant. I will make this again. I did not use the potatoes and I added heavy whipping cream."
