My kitchen is a busy place over the holidays, but I enjoy taking the time to make these nuts. They’re the perfect balance of sweet and spicy. —Valerie Belley, St. Louis, Missouri

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups mixed nuts

Directions

In a large bowl, mix the first six ingredients. Add nuts; toss to coat. Spread onto a 15-in. x 10-in. x 1-in. baking pan.
Bake at 300° for 35-40 minutes or until nuts are lightly toasted and appear dry, stirring occasionally. Serve warm or at room temperature. Store in an airtight container. Yield: 4 cups.

"I did make this recipe when this issue for Dec/January 2013 came out! I DID make modifications to suit my tastes & made the nuts & added 1 package miniature pretzels (12-oz.), 1/2 cup oil, 7-1/2 oz. package of crackers (cheese crackers) & reduced the amount of cayenne pepper to 1/2 tsp. I used 3/4 tsp. to 1 tsp. garlic SALT & 2 cups of mixed nuts-I don't recall having enough nuts, so I'd filled in with the crackers and pretzels. I've used a large roasting pan, rather than a 15x10x1" pan. For me, this arrangement works better

than a 15x10x1" pan. I'm into making snack mixes with nuts added and the snack mixes are a hit with the people from my congregation at the coffee break on Sunday mornings! Thank you for sharing this recipe, Valerie! DELowenstein"

"I've made this recipe several times using walnuts, pecans and peanuts. It has just the right amount of sweet and spice. I even tried sprinkling a few over vanilla ice cream - yummmm!"

"I am always looking for a good recipe for roasted nuts. This is by far the best I've ever tried! They were a huge hit everywhere I took them this holiday season and now I'll be making them for our Super Bowl Party."

"These are tasty! I almost didn't put in the full amount of cayenne because I don't like things very spicy, but I stuck with the entire teaspoon and am very glad I did... there really isn't much heat to these, but 1 teaspoon was perfect. I used cashews instead of mixed nuts, personal preference. These nuts actually have a barbecued flavor... makes sense when you look at the ingredients I guess. The one thing I didn't like about this recipe is that the nuts turn out very grainy because of the sugar... I'd be more inclined to make these again if I maybe either added a little water so some of the sugar would dissolve... or maybe even try an egg white to coat the nuts first like I do for my cinnamon spiced almonds that I make. Overall this is a great and tasty recipe... if I can figure out how to make the sugar part less grainy, this would definitely be a 5-star recipe!"
