Family-Pleasing Sloppy Joe Sandwiches Recipe

Family-Pleasing Sloppy Joe Sandwiches Recipe

My grandchildren love these sandwiches. I like the recipe because it can be made ahead of time and keeps well in a slow cooker. I've found that it freezes well, too. —Patricia Ringle, Edgar, Wisconsin
TOTAL TIME: Prep: 10 min. Cook: 45 min. YIELD:8 servings

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1-1/4 cups ketchup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 8 sandwich buns, split

Directions

  • 1. In a Dutch oven, cook beef and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Stir in the ketchup, water, brown sugar, vinegar, salt, mustard, chili powder and allspice. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 35-40 minutes or until heated through.
  • 2. Spoon about 1/2 cup meat mixture onto each bun. Yield: 8 servings.

"wanted to make sloppy joes but didn't have any canned stuff. Found this recipe and had everything on hand. Only thing I did different was add some worschesiter 2 teaspoon. I was Leary of the all spice but it just added a different layer of flavor. No more canned for me. My family loved it"

"My family loved this recipe! I made it in my slow cooker! Browned the ground beef and onion on stove top setting in my cooker, then added the other ingredients and cooked on low for about four hours. I omitted the allspice and did add a few dashes of worcestershire sauce. Made it for Halloween and it was a hit! Doubt I will ever used canned sloppy joe sauce again. This one's a keeper!"

"I've been making sloppy joes for years using the recipe I received from my mother-in-law. I've been reluctant to use it since it calls for a can of tomato soup, and I've been trying to avoid corn syrup. I used ketchup that does not contain corn syrup, so I wondered if that would matter. It didn't matter. This recipe turned out excellent, and it will be the recipe I use from now on. Don't hesitate to try it. It's great."
