Reviews for Crumb Topped Apple Pie
"This pie was very delicious, and was also pretty easy to prepare. We love pies with a crumb topping, so we loved this one! I did however, cut down a bit on the flour, since I used Granny Smith apples (which don't release a lot of juice). I added a sprinkle of nutmeg, and also a few grains of salt into the apple mixture (because that's what my mom always did, and her pies were incredible!)"
"Made this yesterday. Absolutely delicious. Wonderful to try a five star recipe that lives up to five stars. A great addition to my file."
"I love how easy this is to make and how delicious it comes out! Well, I guess I shouldn't say it's easy because I bought pie crusts.. :P But I have to eat gluten-free so I used gluten-free pie crust and gluten-free all-purpose flour. Works beautifully, tastes so good. I've made two in the past week or so and a third is in the oven right now for my boyfriend's mom and family. The first two I used Michigan macintosh apples, the third is with Michigan honeycrisp apples and it smells great baking. I also mixed about 2 tbsp of butter with the apple slices before putting them in the crust. Thanks for the awesome recipe! (I joined just so I could comment on this :)"
"I've been making this apple pie for years now and it is the BEST!!"
"I make baked goods for work all the time. A girl at worked requested an apple pie for her birthday. So I decided to go with this one. I got 3 thumbs up, if that's even possible :). So after she raved about it, along with her family, I decided to make one for myself around turkey Day. Needless to say, it certainly didnt last long :(. This had to be the best apple pie I have ever had. Will be making it for the Christmas holiday as well.I highly recommend!!!"
"A little too tart for our taste but I would definitely make again in a heartbeat using Golden Delicious or a less tart apple. We also used a pre-made shell to save time and it turned out just great. Other than the type of apple, it was very good. Will stay in our collection for sure."
"This pie was great, from the crust to the crumb topping."
"Delicious and easier than the recipe I had been using. It never lasts more than 24 hours in our home! My husband and kids love it!"
"Very much enjoyed the crumb topping....easy, tasty and well received by everyone at table. Thanks!"
"This pie recipe is a keeper. Added some pecans to the topping. Used Granny Smith apples adding one extra....easier than the recipe I used to use."
"This is very similar to a recipe I always use for my apple pie, but I didn't have my recipe with me, so I went searching. I had rave reviews for this. I always use Granny Smith apples in my pies."
"This is my favorite apple pie recipe I have come across and I make it every year for Thanksgiving since my husband is not a fan of the traditional pumpkin pie like I am. Great flavor and so easy to make. Love the homemade pie crust too! I will be putting together extra pies this year to take to our other Thanksgiving dinner we attend."
"This is by far my favorite, and my go-to, apple pie recipe. Too delicious! I've made it a dozen times since I saw it two years ago in an issue. One of my favorite things to do is instead of using the listed apples, I will sometimes do all honeycrisp apples instead. Amazing! Other than that, this is one of the few recipes that I don't change to fit my liking. This one should be on everyone's fall pie list!"
"This was the most delicious pie ever!"
"Delicious - although I did something wrong with the topping I guess, it didn't turn out like "Dutch" topping usually does, it stayed crunchy and sugary. I was disappointed in how it looked but it tasted wonderful!"
"Excellent pie and presentation....."
"love this apple pie recipe i make it over and over again and everyone loves it."
"My boyfriend really liked this apple pie; however, it was a little sweet for me. I think the next time I may cut down on the amount of sugar in the topping."
"My daughter's friends and teacher loved this pie. I thought it a bit too sweet but that's just me. I did have a problem with the crust browning too quickly so next time I'll reduce the initial cooking temp. Think it is a problem with my oven tho. :)"
"Such a simple recipe, such delicious results! This is the best apple pie I've had. A couple of hints:Make sure you use tart apples - granny smiths do really well in this recipe. Mound the apples up in your crust. It will sink down when it cooks in the oven. It also helps to put a piece of foil beneath the pie in the oven to avoid bubble over in your oven!"
"This makes the best Apple pie!!! The crust recipe alone is worth it and I will be using this crust recipe for other pies I make! This apple pie is award winning. I made this pie for Thanksgiving and I never got so many compliments. Quite a few people told me this was the best Apple pie they ever had. I will definitely make again!"
"I made this for a pot luck and everyone raved over it. I'm making two for Thanksgiving this year!"
"Everyone raved about this pie and all wanted the recipe. So simple and so good. Definitely use a tart apple."
"I've made this pie several times and always got rave reviews!"
"Everything an apple pie should be, my family loves it. Perfect balance of sweetness & apples. Used Macoun apples. All Raves"
"My family all loved this recipe and have asked me often to make it again. I actually think it's a bit too sweet, just me though."
"My daughter found this recipe, and has made it numerous times for family gatherings. It is VERY GOOD!! Better than just a normal apple pie!! Thanks to my daughter our family will be enjoying this recipe again!!"
"has gone over very well in my family!!"
"I make standard apple pies all the time but I thought i'd try something a little different. This was delicious and my husband and toddler loved it. I used a store bought pie crust because I just won't make one when the store bought ones work wonderfully. I did use apple pie spice along with the cinnamon because I like it that way but otherwise I followed the instructions exactly. I only needed 4 large apples. I will be making this again soon and its going into my "regularly used" recipe book"
"I've never made an apple pie before and have always wanted to. The first time I came across this recipe in the magazine I knew I wanted to make this pie. I just wanted to wait for the right time. So yesterday we had our first cold snap and I had a huge basket of apples and felt I had my opportunity. I was nervous about making the pie crust because me and pie crusts don't get along. Usually I opt for the Pillsbury dough boy. So I lovingly, just like Virginia Floren Olsen, set about to make this pie. It is the best pie ever. I can't say that enough. The pie crust turned out perfectly. I did substitute butter for the shortening in the pie crust since I didn't have any. I was so proud of my achievement in my first apple pie. My picky husband loved it. I will definately be making this again. So thank you Mrs.Olson for this wonderful pie recipe. It really is a gift."
"We loved this recipe and I will definately make it again."
"This is a great recipe and is very easy to follow. I love the crumb topping. No wonder she makes so many over the holidays!! The only thing I did differently was add some lemon juice to the apples. This is what my dad always did and I love slight tang that it gives to the apples. I will be making this recipe many times over the holidays!"
"I liked this but cut the apples to 4 instead of 5 because I think it would have overflowed. Maybe it was my oven, but I also would reduce the amount of topping if I make this again. The topping didn't brown evenly, and I ended up scraping some of it off. I did use prepared crust, so maybe that had something to do with it as well. It was still good."
"I used my own pie crust but this recipe was super simple and my family loved it. I will definately make this again."
"I made this and it was absolutely delicious. My whole family loved it:~)"
"This was my first homemade apple pie. Everyone loved it. I will definitely make this again."
"Got my daughter's review: "bangin'!" Deeelish!!"
"My family loved it!!"
"I got this receipe in the latest Taste of Home and my family raved about it, I shared a piece with my neighbor and she has a bag of apples and asked me to make one for her. excellent and easy receipe. I did use a already prepared crust though but the rest was great."
