"I can still taste these wonderful peas in Mama's delicious white sauce. Our food was pretty plain during the week, so I thought this white sauce made the peas 'extra fancy' and fitting for a Sunday meal."

  • 1 package (10 ounces) frozen peas
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Nutritional Facts

1/2 cup: 110 calories, 4g fat (2g saturated fat), 12mg cholesterol, 271mg sodium, 14g carbohydrate (6g sugars, 3g fiber), 5g protein.


  1. Cook peas according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, melt the butter. Stir in the flour, salt and pepper until blended; gradually add milk and sugar. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 1-2 minutes or until thickened. Drain peas; stir into the sauce and heat through. Yield: 3-4 servings.

"These were pretty tasty. I think it could have possibly used just a tad more sugar, but perhaps the peas I had just weren't the sweet kind. I'd make this side dish again (it was very easy), but maybe try to tweak the sauce just a tad."

"This is wonderful! I was impressed by two things - 1, the sauce did not become grainy after boiling, and 2, the sugar improved the flavor of the sauce 100%. The only thing I did different was not precook the peas. I used frozen, placed them in cold water to thaw, drained well the put them in as I heated the sauce up. They were perfect. Thank you so much for this recipe!"
