Reviews for Cowboy Casserole
"The whole family loved this. It was quick and easy to put together. I did double the recipe for 4 servings. I had to bake it a few minutes longer as we like our taters crispy but it came out great. Thanks for sharing!"
"I always double this & cook ground beef with onions & garlic... Sometimes peppers & mushrooms. I also use a can of condensed bean & bacon soup & a can of cream of mushroom soup. Also bake at 400 for about 30 minutes as we like the tots crispy!"
"I love this recipe I make it for pot lucks but this past week I made it for a cabin of 18 and I read all the bland comments and thought I can't take that. So I got creative I put garlic in it of course. Then fiesta corn more sweet corn, kidney beans, black beans yeah it's a lot of extras but it was probably a triple recipe and probably weighted 15 lbs lol I couldn't carry it. But it fed a lot of folks and even got a call after we got home did you have any extras, why yes I had also made my daughter a pan while she was home for the weekend and of course she didn't eat it lol SUPER SUCCESS!!!!!!"
"Family favorite but I double this recipe 4 times and put in a 11x13 pan!"
"Good but definitely needed a bit of extra flavour. I added brown sauces and beef powder. Also, I would let the tater tops thaw a little first as they weren't quite cooked when the casserole was ready!"
"My family loves it! I use the whole can of soup, and add some French fried onions on top during the last 15 min of cooking. Great comfort dish in the winter!"
"my whole family enjoyed it a lot super delicous"
"It was very bland. It needs somes spices like salt, onion powder, garlic powder, etc. But other than that it was very good and I plan to make it again with alot of added spices."
"this is tator tot hotdish with sour cream and cheese"
"You can use Cream of Onion soup instead of Onion Powder also. Or mix the Cream of Onion and The Cream of Chicken soup."
"Good easy meal."
"All family members liked."
"My family loved this! I stirred in a can of green beans for some extra veggie & color! A simple, easy meal perfect for busy week nights!"
"It's a keeper for my family! My family of 6: two adults, two teens, two grade-schoolers were all pleased with this recipe. Of course we had to triple it to feed us for one dinner. Though the recipe was good to start out with, the next time we'll be adding green chiles, chopped onions, and maybe some other spices to add more flavor."
"For a less mushy casserole I fried my taters and instead of tater tots I used Baby Cakes Mini Hasbrowns by McCains. Either way the fry gives it more crunch. In addition to that, for extra flavor I added 2 tsp garlic, 1 tsp salt, 2 tbsp onion powder, 2 tbsp paprika and upped the amount of pepper to 1 tsp. For extra kick I added 1/8 tsp chilli powder."
"My family loves this!!!"
"My husband thought this was ok but I did not care for it at all. I found it to be tasteless and the potatoes were mushy. It needed more time in the oven to heat through. I would not make this again."
"very bland if using cream of chicken soup. I would suggest following tater tot casserole and use soy sauce."
"How on earth did this recipe come up with 1,675 mg of sodium and 38 g of fat for just one serving? most of this must come from the Tater Tots because there is not very much other ingredients that could do that."
"This is the kind of recipe I like the most - quick, easy, and yummy."
"I'm making this tonight and it just sounds scrumptious! I will add some chopped onion and omit the onion powder for added texture and I'm also using shredded hasbrowns instead of tater tots. Looking forward to this!"
"Made this recipe with a few "tweaks" for dinner this evening. I omitted the sour cream (just didn't have any,) used 1 lb beef, full can of Cream of Mushroom, no milk, added chopped onions and bell peppers to the grown beef when it was browning, omitted the onion power and pepper. My family loved it! My Granddaughter asked if I would make it as part of our Christmas dinner."
"Yummy. I doubled the recipe and it fit fine in a 9x13" pan. Doubling it allowed me to use one lb. ground meat (I used turkey), one can of soup, one bag tater tots and one 16 oz. bag frozen corn... much easier than having leftover ingredients cluttering up my fridge/freezer. I added some leftover black beans and cut down on the sodium by using frozen corn and "healthy" soup and it still tasted fine. I think the addition of some diced tomatoes would be good. Overall we liked it very much and will definitely make it again!"
"This is comfort food at it's best. Calorie counting , healthy eating , and watching all the non healthy things is a day to day given, BUT now and then you just HAVE to indulge. Life is short, enjoying and indulging now and then is healthy, watching the fat and the calories will keep til tomorrow, just like the cobwebs."
"I have made this recipe several times - it replaced my old Tater tot hotdish! I do use half cream of chicken soup, and half cream of mushroom soup + add onion and garlic to the ground beef when browning. Delish! Also, to comment on JBTOHIO's rate - Taste Of Home.com DOES have a section called 'Healthy Eating'. Why dont you stick to that area, and keep your negative comments to yourself. thanks! :)"
"JBTOhio re:nutrition remember the title a cowboy needs all this after a full days work but for an octogenarion like me it's too much even though it's very good.."
"too many Calories, too many grams of Fat. Way too High in SODIUM and too many Carbs and the Cholesterol too much. only positive thing is the 6 Grams of FIBER....shame on Taste of Home for even printing this... 1 serving is over half the recommended amount of Salt for a whole day ( 1500 mg)... Get Real and Check out these recipes before you print.. This recipe is not healthy at all..."
"I also added a can of red kidney beans and a can of black beans..."

"Quick, easy, tasty and "Comfort food""
"My kids liked it but the younger one thought it was too creamy. Everyone else devoured it without second thoughts."
"Very good, and so easy.I added onion, green pepper,Lawry's,and a little garlic powder to the hamburger, when I was browning it.I substituted frozen kernel corn versus the canned. Also used more tator tots.It had a lot of flavor."
"My husband and I LOVE this casserole! Good comfort food!"
"Could use more spices for added excitement."
"EVERYONE WENT FOR 2NDS :O)"
"This was a great new dinner for my arsenal! The kids liked it with ketchup."
"My husband and I enjoy this recipe a lot and it gets requested often by others."
"I make this casserole at least once a month, it has become one of my families favorites!!"
"I didn't think that this had a lot of flavor. I added 1/3 cup of chopped onions and 4 cloves of garlic, and 1 tsp of pepper, and still, it had the salty bland casserole taste. The predominant flavor was the tater tots. It is better than the standard green bean tater tot casserole though."
"Easy & good! My kids enjoyed this version much better than the green bean version! I have been requested to make this again soon!"
"I made this for a church potluck breakfast. I used bulk Italian Sausage instead of hamburger. It was very good. Everyone loved it. It was really good reheated the next day. Will try it with hamburger too for a regular potluck meal. Very easy to make."
"Liked the merging of the flavors. Used the mini-tator tots; liked them because they didn't dominate the dish like the regular sized ones can."
"My family really enjoyed this. I added a few spices. 1/2 tsp cumin, 1 tsp dried mustard powder and 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes. I will definitely make this again."
"Made this for my family last night. I put cheddar cheese soup instead of the cream of chicken and left out the shredded cheese as well.i do not eat any meats except seafood, so i did not eat this dish, but my family absolutely loved it."
"Wonderfully simple and really tasty! Next time I will double the ingredients and make an extra to freeze for later."
"Sounds like the one I make only the tater tots are only on top. I brown the hamberger with onion and garlic. Drain, Spread in 8 by 8 pan, pour chicken soup over hamberger then add the cheese, then place the tatertots on top. Bake until tatertots are golden brown. After it comes out of the oven, let it sit for a few minutes and it should not be runny when you cut it."
"Looks delicious - but I could not even consider the number of calories per serving, the cholesterol, or the sodium - some adjustments would have to be made!"
"This was yummy, but I have made it for years using green beans and mushroom soup instead and I think I like it better. Was a nice change though!"
"Super easy and inexpensive! I doubled everything but the corn. Baked in a 9 x13 pan for 30-35 minutes at 375. The leftovers as others have said are awesome!"
""This is a Keeper" everyone said. Family of 3 boys so I double it and added garlic powder the second time. Great leftovers if I get it put away fast enough."
"The whole family really enjoyed this. I will add it to the monthly rotation!"
"I liked this - it was easy and had a good flavor - but my 5 year decidedly did not. I made as the recipe directed, except I seasoned the meat with Adobo instead of pepper and onion powder. I would probably layer all the tater tots on top if I were to make it again and maybe add some onions and peppers for some added veggies."
"I used venison that had been cut for stew meat instead of ground beef. It was delicious! We are a family with two teenage boys and one ten year old boy so I definitely doubled the ingredients. Based on some of the previous reviews I did NOT double the milk. And I probably used more than double the cheese as I didn't really measure I just added until it looked right. Our store was out of regular Tater Tots so I used the onion variety. No one complained ! I also used frozen corn instead of canned. Baked it up in a 9" x 13" for about 40 minutes. Will definitely make again."
"My family loves this. I added sauted onions in place of the onion powder. This reheats wonderful so you can have it for lunches or dinner without it drying out."
"I recently retired but wife is still working. I triple this recipe and it comes out great. She appreciates a meal when she gets home. Left overs are wonderful, also."
"My daughtr made this. It was easy to make and yummy"
"I make it x4 in a 13x9 so we have a hot lunch all week. Everyone loves it!"
"My husband loves!!! this recipe."
"I've made this twice now and doubled the recipe so we would have leftovers. Good stuff and good comfort food!"
"This was great!! Made for my family of five so I doubled the recipie, and also added 4 oz. of cream cheese to make it extra creamy!! Everyone loved it!!"
"added full can of soup, more tater tots. excellent"
"I doubled everything in the recipe and it tasted great, but was a little runny. Also, we decided it needs more tater tots. Next time, I won't double the milk, and maybe triple the tater tots. Super easy and tasty!"
"I made this for my family and everyone really liked it. I used double the meat, cheese and tater tots and it came out great. No leftovers!"
"I am wondering.. Did anyone else think it made more than 2 servings? Also, I didn't have corn so I used green beans. Family said that worked as well!"
"This is a wonderful recipe, reminded me of shepherd's pie. I did tweak it some - I added a dash of cayenne, used the entire can of soup and doubled all of the other ingredients but the corn - and cooked it for 30 min. in a 2 qt. casserole dish. Mmmm mmmm!"
"My family loved it! I dbled the recipe and it made plenty of leftovers which was even better the day afterwards."
"Husband loved it and it was so easy! It was even better the next day!"
"This is great, we loved it! Added a larger can of corn, more tots and cheese, yummy! Makes a lot, but it does make good leftovers."
"Husband loved this, and it's so easy!"
"this dish is so good. the seasonings give it a wonderful taste. it is very filling. the best part is there is plenty for leftovers! this is definitely going into the recipe box!"
