Reviews for Contest-Winning Hearty Hamburger Soup
"Picky family loves it. I didn't add the salt. I added small can tomato sauce and 1 tbl beef base."
"I'm trying new soups, and this is very good. I used a pound and a half of sirloin ground beef, three medium potatoes instead of two. I added minced garlic, one dried bay leaf, a shot of Worcestershire, fresh oregano instead of dried, about 4 capers. I used 5 beef bouillon cubes and one chicken bouillon cube and a little more water. I used the recommended on the carrots, celery, fresh green beans, and onion. My only complaint is that it still felt a little bland, but that's my personal preference. Very hearty and tasty, and kids like it."
"Cut salt/sodium way down by using unsalted beef broth instead of water and bullion. also, use unsalted tomatoes. Leave the 1 1/2 tsp salt out until you taste it."
"Oh how I wish there was much less Sodium! The rest is great."
"Been making this for years, sometimes adding a little grated turnip or some chopped cabbage. Seems to really boost the flavor. My 100 yr old mother often requests this soup."
"Good, crowd-pleasing recipe. I especially like that the vegetables are cooked perfectly and not overdone. We prefer it with extra pepper and oregano, and a 28 oz can of tomatoes."
"Can you make this in the crock pot?"
"and added corn!"
"A delicious and hearty soup. Nice to see someone from my area posted here. I'm from Rockford IL..Thank you Barbara!"
"I didn't have the onions so I substituted shallots. I liked the quickness of this hearty soup."
"This is a great soup for anytime of the week and any weather! Very hearty and absolutely delicious! My family LOVES it when I make it and it doesn't last! :)"
"Enjoyed this simple recipe. I like a little spice so I used a can of original ro- tel and half a can of diced tomatoes. As I was browning the hamburger I added 1 TBS of Worchestershire. I also like my soup a little thicker so I used 3 cups of water and one cup of tomato juice. Just the right amount of extra flavor I was looking for."
"my family loved this. will make again"
"Very good, but did have to add extra spices. Tasted bland otherwise. Once I added the extra spices and cheese, it was very good. I did have to add extra broth when I reheated, because all the liquid was soaked up. I will make this again."
"This turned out to be a nice, under assuming little soup. It was easy to prepare, and fairly inexpensive. The only change we made was, after tasting the soup with the called for oregano, we added Italian seasoning to add more flavor. I'm planning on making it again soon and trying Italian sausage instead of ground beef."
"We love this easy stew."
"Very tasty! I changed some of the spices to my liking, but other than that, this was great! ^_^"
"Amazing every time! I don't make any changes except use Hunt's Diced Tomatoes Fire Roasted With Garlic for the canned tomatoes in the recipe. Even with regular unflavored canned tomatoes it still tastes amazing. Sometimes I add some chopped green bell pepper too in addition to everything else. So good."
"Delicious!! The family really enjoyed. I used beef broth instead of water..added garlic powder and a dash of cilantro.... enhanced the flavor."
"Delish?? My husband likes spicy foods, so I added a can of hot Rotel tomatoes. Didn't have green beans, so I added frozen peas and carrots. Definitely will make it again."
"Is is one of my all time favorite recipes. Sometimes I make it as is.. Often I add peas instead of green beans and use Swanson broth."
"Delicious. I didn't make any adjustments to the recipe. Made it twice already."
"I made this again and I am reminded how good this soup is! The only changes I made were 1- omit onion, 2- add diced tomatoes with green chills (Rotels).SO wonderfully full of flavor. I serve it with biscuits so I can soak up the juice. YUM."
"Great flavor!! I did not have celery but added chopped green and yellow bell pepper. Used better than bullion instead of regular bullion. 28 oz diced tomatoes. Will make again"
"This one is a keeper. I would not change a thing."
""Hearty" is the perfect description of this soup! I added some chopped pepper and used canned green beans. Makes a big batch, so I froze half of it."
"Great tasting, easy to make, inexpensive to make. Can you ask for more?"
"I make this every winter and cold day! It is an awesome soup!My favorite! Thank you for another great recipe!"
"I eliminated the water & used 1_1/2 32 oz beef broth as I am gluten intolerant & can't have the beef bouillon granules. Also didn't have celery, so substituted green peppers instead & didn't have the fresh or frozen green beans, so added a pint of home canned green beans juice & all. Turned out great & my hubbie really liked it!"
"easy and delicious! I used stewed tomatoes and added frozen corn with the green beans. This one's a keeper!"
"Surprisingly tasty for something so simple!"
"This soup is delicious! We fix it often, especially during the winter months."
